another thumb pitch question...please help info needed
« on: October 13, 2009, 01:13:53 PM »
Ok. Let me start off by saying that i have drilled several balls with different pitches and have narrowed it down to one that feels good. Let me start off by saying I have a long span with my long finger being 5 1/4. My thumb is also very long. My driller said let's try 3/4 reverse just for kicks and see what happens. I thought i would have a lot of trouble holding onto it, but i actually really like it. I get out of it cleaner and even noticed more backend reaction with the ball we did it on. My question does 3/4 seem excessive? I have only been bowling a couple years and have heard about everyone going with less reverse and things like that. I really don't know what's right, but the 3/4 feels good. I just don't wannabe risk hurting myself or anything. Any advice is greatly appreciated. My old pitch i was going with was 3/8 reverse and zero lateral. I sometimes felt like i had to force myself out of the ball with that. Thanks in advance.

Hard to say without seeing you in person, but IMO there is no wrong, just different.  3/4 is a lot of reverse, but if you are able to set your thumb and hold the ball without death gripping, then go for it.  If your swing is loose enough, you can repeat shots, and YOU like it, then go with it.  I wouldn't make a decision until you have bowled with it for a month or two, checking to see what kind of blisters or bumps you get if any.

I agree with Mike.  Many things such as thumb joint stiffness and thumb length affect the best thumb pitch for an individual.  When you find something you like and can release smoothly without having to squeeze, stay with it.  I personally have used 3/4 reverse pitch and am currently at 1/2 reverse.  --  JohnP

No right or wrong answer here.  If it feels right and you can hang on to the ball, it is all good.

Each person is different.  I'm 4 7/16ths span with 1/4 fwd pitch.  My father in law is 4 3/8 span with 3/8 rev.  How he hangs on to the ball I don't know, but whatever works for him.

Comfort comes first.

Mine is 1/2 reverse and 1/4 away and I love it. Some people prefer less or even under. With mine pitch the way they are I can keep my hand relaxed and get out of the ball clean.
