Interchangeable thumbs. Desperate need to do this!
« on: December 07, 2014, 07:23:54 PM »
I have a dillema.  I am needing to change my equipment over to interchangeable thumb as I cannot get every ball to feel the same and it's messed me up big time. the pro shop I go to does not do any of the interchangeable thumbs and so I need to find a REPUTABLE shop in the Chicagoland area(preferably NW suburbs) who also won't gouge in pricing either.  I'm looking into getting 2 balls done first before going all out and changing all my equipment.

I've heard both positive and negative things of having the interchangeable thumbs.  I've also heard the same about both interchangeable thumb systems.

I'm leaning towards the Vise IT system based on what I have seen.  Can anyone assist me?

i have the vise ITs and have to say i absolutely love them. i had them put in about 5 years ago and still have a ball or two with the original parts and no issues. i had 3 slugs done when i drilled it and still have them all. never had any of the parts inside the ball break either. i ve probably drilled 20 balls with them over the years and the biggest problem i had was that the outer ring in the thumb  hole came unglued and i had to reglue it.

in the past the Vise system was superior to the switch grips but the current generation of switch grips i think are just as good as the ITs. at this point its just personal brand prefference or preference of the proshop installing them. the Turbos are a little easier to install but the ITs are by no means difficult to put in.

A lot of the time (not all the time) you get what you pay for when it comes to bowling services.  I understand the desire to save as much money as possible, but don't be afraid to pay adequately for good service.

For me, a proper fit and consistent drilling between balls is worth more than the going rate for those services.

It's not about just saving money.  But since it was brought up, does this make sense. Pro shops charge $60 or more just for drilling if a ball is not purchased through them. However, you take a used ball to the same pro shop and get everything plugged and redrilled for $45.  What's wrong with this picture?  They still do the same work with the customer with layouts etc.

I'm just looking for a reputable pro shop in the NW suburbs of IL who does the Vise IT.

Makes perfect sense.  There is actually more work plugging a balls, but there is no risk.

I'm confused by this statement. What makes perfect sense?  Wouldn't it cost MORE to do the plug work and redrill than drilling a blank ball where there is no risk as the consumer would have to deal with whomever they purchased the blank ball from?

No risk in making a mistake drilling a plugged ball.  If you miss you simply plug it again.  If you miss on a blank drill you eat a ball.

I think Steve Jaros still runs J&J Bowling Supply over in Wheaton.

Steve hasn't been in Fox for a couple of years. He's out in Yorkville now. Another young guy is in there, and it's run by the center. There's always Paul at Woodridge, or Ed Moores at Bowling Green in West Chicago.
