Title: 5x5
Post by: hhsbowler on July 02, 2007, 05:35:42 PM
My friend and i were having a discussion about layouts on a bowling ball.  He said that a 5x5 drilling was for length and controll, and 5x4 was for length and snap.

I disagreed with him saying that a pin 5 inches from the axis will create more of a flip reaction while the 5x4 will create length but a smoother breakpoint.

I understand that static weights don't matter so where the c.g. is will have no effect on the reaction except for where the weight hole is placed.

So who was correct??

I would say that generally you are correct, BUT, it depends on the person's PAP, rotation, tilt.  But, generally the 5X4 is going to have the MB out farther which may have cause for an X hole.  The hole placed properly will make the ball lose axis rotation sooner, and/or roll sooner, lose energy faster and be smoother at the break point.

Your mileage may vary.....

If the ball is a symetrical ball with no mass bias built into it, then there will be no difference unless the distance from the pin to the virticle axis line is different, or a weight hole is used.

If cg doesn't matter then a symetric ball with a long pin out doesn't have enough mass bias to effect ball motion, or does it? I don't remember Brunswick trying two different balls with simillar static weights, but with different pin to cg distances. Fire up the throwbot, lets see it.

Thank you both for your replies.

Anyone else care to chime in?
