What are the best changeable thumbs, Vise, Turbo, Lane1?
« on: January 30, 2012, 09:48:10 AM »
I'm looking to start drilling up my staff balls and looaking to start using the interchangeable thumbs. I hear good and bad things about each one so really don't know which one to choose. Please discuss pros and cons everyone has with each one.

ITS NEVER THE BALL OR THE LANES FAULT, ITS OPERATOR ERROR.

I have only used VISE IT, they are phenomenal.  They seem to lock in good, they don't move around with your hand in the ball too much, and they don't fall apart.  Ive had a couple turbo guys complain they dont last and they can feel them move in the ball.  On the other hand I witnessed a VISE IT snap and it wasn't pretty.

Turbo. Easiest to install and I've had no issue with any breaking and I use a ton of them.

I don't personally use them, but have heard good things about the Grp-Loc System.

My vote is for the Grip Loc system.  My ball guy tells me it is more reliable than the VISE system, and he has seen it all.  I like it a lot and since I switched, my thumb issues have disappeared.

For what it's worth . . . .

Zero issues with the Vise IT.  Every ball I have has the IT installed.

The question is very subjective though.  They are all good products.

I use the Vise IT's and love them. I have encountered minor problems but have never had one break on me while bowling. I have them in 16 bowling balls and have to admit some of them have a small creak noise to them. It appears that they have a minor, very minor play to them at the top of the hole. In no way a detriment to my bowling. The biggest thing I hate is the installation, total PIA......

You will get people liking all of them.  The question you should be asking is "what are teh best interchangeable thumb systems for people who grab the ball a lot."  My experience has been that they all work good for people who don't grab the ball.  With Grip-Loc, when a bowler repeatedly grabs the ball it wears notch in the locking L mechanism on the slug and then even though the inner is secure, the inner will move slightly in your backswing making you think it is coming out.  With Turbo which is what I personally use, I have experienced some tabs breaking, but more commonly wearing out and therefore not wanting to lock as securely as when the inner was brand new.  I haven't heard of any problems with any of the interchangeable thumb systems from people who DON'T grab the ball.

I am a grabber. Always have been. I use the it system. Have been for about 3 years. I have never had any major problems. Had one that was kind of hard to screw in. Turned out to be a minor defect. Proshop changed it out and have not had a problem since.

I won't tell you which is the best as I have no first hand knowledge working with some of them, but I can tell you I have installed over 500 ITs into customer's balls, and have not had a single one fail. I have had 2 slugs seperate from the bottom piece (slug-it). Ironically, they did it at around the same time, and I attributed it to bad glue. I began installing the IT system 4 years ago, and they definitely have held up over the years. IF THEY ARE INSTALLED PROPERLY, they will work great. There are quite a few little quirks and tricks about them that make them a lot simpler to work with. Feel free to PM me if you want any additional info.

The thing I never liked about the Turbo was that it was only a 1/4 turn to lock into place,  the Vise IT is a 3/4 turn.  The IT just seems more secure to me.  A teammate of mine witnessed a Turbo slug come out of the ball last week.  Funny thing is that it happened to the guy that owns the center and is also the pro shop operator.  He has no idea what happened, nothing broke, it just seemed to spin just enough to come out or he didn't have it locked in correctly.  If I didn't have mine locked in, I would know it right away since I have an ovaled thumb, my thumb only fits in one way.

When I had the Turbo setup, it wasn't installed quite right and wore out the "nubs" that lock it into place and would then spin freely.  I didn't like that at all so I switched to the IT and never an issue with anything.
