A few layout questions
« on: November 02, 2007, 05:15:12 AM »
Does anyone use a system where after you choose your layout pin to pap and degree that you also use a flare safe alignment? It seems as if your longer pins are beside the middle finger and shorter pin to paps are where a hole has to be drilled?

Three dimensions are needed to finalize a layout.  First is pin to PAP.  Second is MB to PAP, which can be specified as either an angle or dimension.  Third can be distance from pin to midline, distance from pin to VAL (or pin buffer), or the recently implemented "dual angle".  The trick is to select that third dimension so that the pin falls in the safe zone.  Or, if the pin doesn't fall in the safe zone, selecting a location, diameter, and depth of a balance hole to raise the bowtie enough to avoid thumping the finger holes.  --  JohnP

Ok but my problem is with the pin in a ball layout sheet it will show pin above fingers with lets say 5 1/2 in pin to pap. Now i do that and then i use the flare safe alignment degree and for me im low track so its 55 degrees. Now with that realignment it will put the pin next to the middle finger not above the fingers. So im wondering how this keeps the pap length proper even though the pin is now where its supposed to be according to the layout sheet. Am i missing something?

Have you seen this? It might clarify the process for you.

Yes i have that as well but any of the longer pin to paps i try to use pin is in very strange places and almost always will the pin be where a finger hole should go

Pins in finger holes aren't a big deal.  Be sure to drill out the pin with a pilot bit first though, then finish with the bit for the correct hole size.

The difference between the way your ball looks and the way it's shown in the illustration is that the PAP dimensions used for the illustration aren't the same as yours.  --  JohnP

Mo Pinel had a very good article about this in the recent Bowlers Journal.  Its called the Dual Angle layout technique.  Me personally I like the Degree layout system since I've drilled som many Ebonite balls for friends that I can experiment and find out what works.  I might try this Dual Angle method some more.

bigb4life is using the Pro Sect User guide. I work with him.

He is having problems with drilling fully or partially into the pin. Most balls laid out 4,5 or 6".

My PAP is 5 3/8 X 3/4. I laid out a ball 5" pin to PAP, with 44 degree layout. 45 degree safe alignment. The ring finger is partially in the pin.

2nd part

To get warranty you have to drill holes 1" away from the pin. So what are you guys that are drilling close to the pin do if something happens to the ball for warranty reasons?
