Pin Location Questions
« on: March 10, 2009, 03:26:28 AM »
So I've spent the last few years tinkering with just 4.5 inch pin to pap distances. One RICO, pin under, pin in middle finger, pin above.  The differences in reaction aren't gargantuan, but definitely noticeable.  Now I think when the time comes for a new ball, I'm going to venture out into shorter/longer pins.  I have a general idea of what a 5 inch pin to PAP or a 4 inch pin to PAP would do, and get an idea of how hard they snap/early they roll depending on pin height.  The one area of a ball I'm confused about is the VAL, or there about.  What would a 4 inch pin to PAP, pin on VAL do to a reaction?  What about 4 inch pin right of above and to the right of middle finger, but before the VAL be like?  I'm very curious, and don't have the resources to tinker right now.

Pins closer to your VAL will respond quicker to friction.  I believe you always want to keep the pin inside the VAL because otherwise the ball might(or definitely will, not completely sure) flare backwards.

Hope this helps.

Hey nOOdle,

I have an old Demolition Zone drilled like this (3.5 on val) and it still gives me decent length with the pin height but when it moves, it's much more predictable in reaction.

I also have pieces drilled with pin past pap and they do flare back (been doing this for yrs).  Actually raises the track but much closer to thumb then fingers for me.  Reaction is also much smoother compared to standard layouts.

I tend to use both for offsetting wet/dry conditions or just flying backends.

Hey guys - that's great to know.

I've been toying around the idea of getting another Gravity Shift, drilled to go longer and bounce a little harder at the end of the pattern.  Would something like a 5 inch pin to PAP, pin on VAL be worth considering?

Not sure on how much backend reaction you're looking for but I would "assume" the movement would not be as strong compared to a standard layout.  This however can be different if it allows you to play more of the friction (hypothetically to the right part of the lane) due to the higher pin length which then would offer decent movement from that point.

Hrm...gotcha.

Another slightly related question...is there a drilling for "maximum backend?"  Like, pin and MB in certain locations and certain distances from PAP?

i would keep the pin at least 1" from your VAL...  reason being is because you don't release the ball perfect every time, therefor your VAL shifts slightly.  that shift could cause irratic ball reactions from shot to shot.  Putting the pin on the VAL and say.. you stayed behind the ball really well. This would cause your orig VAL reference to shifted a bit out, the ball would react pretty hard on the backend.  if you got a bit lazy with the hand and your VAL shifted slightly in, your ball rxn would reduce and possibly flare the wrong way clipping a thumbhole.

1" from the VAL is for maxium change of direction off the spot.  I think there was a study posted on one of the sites testing the same PIN distances and different VAL distances.  1" turned out to be the strongest which also turns out to be Tommy Jones favorite layout (in terms of PIN position in relation to his VAL).
