A quick question
« on: November 16, 2016, 07:04:20 AM »
A quick question about ball selection for no thumbers.  Since you can no longer have a thumb hole and weight hole without using your thumb, for the average no thumber what kind of pin length and top weight would you be looking for?

The thumb hole is the weight hole for us. For me I have all my balls drilled different. Some pin up some pin down others pin on the side and I also have a drill of the triangle. It's all about what you want.

Yeah, I got that.  I was just wondering if I should look for/avoid a certain range of top weight or if it doesn't make a terrible difference.  I've never weighed a ball myself before and after drilling so I don't really have a frame of reference for this.

Using the thumb hole position as a weight hole is fine as long as you never put your thumb in the hole when bowling.  The static weights must be legal based on the grip center located between the finger holes.  If you do occasionally use your thumb hole when you throw the ball, say when shooting the ten pin, the static weights must be legal based on both the grip center between the finger holes and the grip center between the finger holes and the thumb hole.  That can be hard to achieve.  --  JohnP

Yeaterday at league. It was a two hander(a sub) and the other team was fussing cause he had a p3 so that made him have an extra whole. Me watching them argue was sooooooooooooo funny to me because they went to the president and all. As the president told him to throw the ball again on the next shot. The president watched him throw the ball then she said that his ball was illegal. Since they was on the lane next to me I had to say something as I am a two hander. I told them and the president that his ball is NOT illegal. Of course they all said yes it is. I told them if you watch carefully he put his thumb in the ball. Which makes his ball Legal because he uses three of the four wholes. They all looked at me crazy, then the president asked him throw again when it's his turn. He did and the president seened that he uses his thumb and said his ball was Legal. I never saw anything like this before but it was funny as hell to me. The other guys was hot.

I don't understand why you thought it was funny? Honestly.
I thought it was true that you're allowed gripping holes plus one weight hole. The president looked to see how he threw it; that is, if he used  the thumb hole, the other hole was allowed because there was one weight hole.
If you don't use your thumb then you're only allowed 3 holes and the thumb hole is the one allowed weight hole.

Isn't that valid? Isn't that he correct interpretation of the rule?

Am I missing the humor because I don't understand the USBC rule?
Or was it funny  just because of all the fuss someone made over it?

The real question is was he using the thumb the whole night or just when the president was watching? That's why this rule sucks. Should it really be my job to video every ball this guy throws so I can show whether he was breaking the rules or not. If they really want to do this the rule needs to be changed to if using the two handed delivery technique your only allowed three holes period as it is the rule is virtually unenforceable.

I'm not sure I see the humor here either. I have a two handed teammate that does use his thumb in some situations for his strike balls I don't know that I've ever seen him bowl like that all night. Most likely the guy in question here was breaking the rules and just made a mockery of the rule and the enforcement of said rule.

Easiest solution is any bowling ball with a 1-3" pin and any top weight under 3.5 ounces. Simply keep the cg near the fingers and you will not need any additional holes besides the two finger holes.

The further the cg gets from the fingers the more the top weight will play a factor along with adding a weight hole. Lower top weight like 2 ozs will move less weight and allow flexibility depending on the layout. A lot of ways to attack this problem. Most depends on the layout the bowler is choosing to use.

To almost completely avoid needing any weighing or weight holes, keep the cg  near, in, or in between the fingers.
