I used to use oval Thumb inserts, but I switched to a urethane slugs 'coz It's much smoother & better on the release. Now I'm trying a direct drill of the thumb hole without any slug. What do I need to expect on not using a thumb slug?
I just got one & made the thumb hole a tad bigger, so I could use some tape on the front & back to eliminate some of the coverstock surface rubbing on my thumb, but I haven't use it yet. I heard before that, If you don't use any thumb inserts or slug that there's a possibility of your thumb sticking to the ball on your release 'coz the coverstock surface tend to suck your thumb/skin oil that prevents it from sticking on the ball. I'm not 100% sure about this, but any opinions will help.
I was thinking, If I could get away from not having thumb slug & finger inserts will save me some money on drilling expense. That's about $20.00 for finger inserts & thumb slug on every ball.

Sir, Thanks for the response. I have tried not having finger inserts & I liked it, but now I want to try the thumb part. Now I need opinion from people not using any slug or inserts on the thumb.

I have urethane slugs in every ball. Having one ball stick on my thumb and not come off at all is too high a price to pay for NOT having the slug.
In case you can't tell, I've been there.

Thumb slugs do provide a consistent feel, but they became popular back when resin balls were rough inside after drilling. Personally stopped using an insert and don't have balls hanging on my hand. My driller leaves the hole smooth as glass too and every oval thumb he drills feels like the last ball.

I've tried it both ways, I've gone back to Vise P/O inserts, easier on my tender fingers, plus I'm able to get more revs on the ball with inserts and less damage or wear and tear on the fingers. Gone back to hard urethane slugs, less sticking or hanging up in the summer time. My thumb size goes up and down on a nightly basis, "like its that time of the month", the hard urethane slug is smoother and has less friction on the thumb for me when it gets humid and warmer, thus I get a smooth unhindered release.

I have both and have no problem getting out of a raw ball thumb.
Of course I use tape in front so I touch very little of the balls surface.
Of course I get out easy anyway.
I'm much more careful in drilling and beveling a pure thumbhole versus slug because once it is too big. It is too big!
