Alot of Flare Rings Bad or Good
« on: March 29, 2006, 06:19:18 AM »
I've been bowling for a while but starting to learn more about the ball. When I throw a ball it has about 7-12 Flare rings on it. This rings start small and get about 1" to 1 1/4" apart. I was wondering if someone could explain this to me. Is this a good or bad thing. Thanks for taking time.

Track flare is just the result of the core making the ball wobble a bit as it goes down the lane.  Each flare ring exposes a fresh surface to the lane, theoretically increasing reaction.  If it didn't flare, the ball would be rolling over a part of the cover already covered with oil which might make it skate a bit.  A lot of flare isn't necessarily good or bad.  The ball, it's surface, the lane conditions, and your rev rate determine how much flare you'll get.  Like anything else, you want the proper amount happening in the proper place.
