No thumb layout advice needed
« on: January 12, 2017, 01:32:20 PM »
I am about to lay out three balls for myself, a Zero Gravity, a Forza GT1, and a Phaze. My goal is for these three to be smooth and rolly, balls I can go to on tougher patterns. Being that I have a solid, a hybrid, and a pearl, I think the coverstock differences are nice starting point. However, I need layouts.

As a no-thumber (for now ; ), I have done a lot of reading on what Mo Pinel suggests for layouts. He basically espouses keeping the cg in (or very close to) the ring finger hole and then picking a pin-to-cg distance between two ranges. He suggests 3/4" - 2 1/2" for smoother layouts and between 3 3/4" - 5 1/4" for more dynamic motion.

My question is this. Should I put each one at the exact same distance (if possible with the pin distances) for pin to pap and let the coverstock/core differences set them slightly apart, or should I play around within those ranges a bit? Thoughts? Suggestions?

Here is the link to Mo's info on no-thumb layouts in case you wanted that:

What are the pin to CG distances on those balls?  I would do one pin above the fingers, one pin down below, and 1 with the pin at 1-2 inches from your axis.  This is depending on the pin to CG distances though.

My thought is the Zero Gravity pin above the fingers and adjust surface to smooth out the backend as the oil ball.  Then decide which of the other 2 will be pin down and the other 1-2 inch pin to PAP.  The cool thing about the pin close to your axis; is you can still polish the ball and not have to worry about the ball being angular on the backend.

I should've made this clearer that I have several other balls already; these are just three new ones I'm toying around with. Since I already have plenty of hook in the bag, my goal with these three is to create super smooth, rolly reactions out of all three. My thought on the different coverstocks (solid, hybrid, and pearl) is that that could and surface prep could give me logical steps up and down. In the end though, I want all three of these very smooth. That's why I was considering going with Mo's really short pin-to-PAP distance on all three.
