Title: Angle of thumb pitch? (hobby driller)
Post by: Moon57 on March 16, 2007, 11:11:40 PM
My thumb pitch is currently set at 1/8 reverse, but this reverse pitch is along my grip center line. When I was experimenting with oval thumb holes, the angle of the oval was about 77 degrees to the grip center line. Now, should I be basing my reverse thumb pitch off the grip center line or the oval angle line? It seems as though it should be from the oval angle line. I've never seen this brought up before so I figured I would throw this out there and see what people thought.

By definition, reverse (or forward) thumb pitch is measured in the centerline direction.  Lateral pitch is measured in the midline direction.  The combination of the two determine the angle of the thumb hole.  --  JohnP

I re-read my post and realized I didn't make myself clear. Instead of the rev pitch in line with the grip center line it would be along a line from approximately the center of the ring finger thru the center of the thumb, about 13 degrees off the gcl. When I hold my hand palm up with the thumb and fingers pointing up in a u the pad of my thumb is pointing at my ring finger. If I move my thumb it wants along the ring finger line. So I guess I'll have to drill up a  ball, throw it and see how it feels. An experiment in the works.

Say Deadbait where are you getting the 33-36 degrees from? What I came up with was 13 deg off gcl. What originally got me thinking about this was the first ovaled thumb ball I got from EBay. The widest part of the oval was not at a right angle to the gcl. I didn't pay much attention at the time but when I tried to oval a thumb hole I did it at an angle to the gcl. Didn't come out too bad but don't have the tools to really do it right.
