Any advantage Pin Down over longer Pin to PAP layouts
« on: March 23, 2018, 10:32:33 AM »
I didn’t have the foggiest about what different layouts can do for your ball reaction until I read a couple of well presented articles by Storm.

I was told that drilling angle on symmetric balls had little effect but pin to pap and whether the ball is pin up or down does. Again, variations of Val angle other than pin up or pin down effect things very slightly.

Excuse the ramblling, I will get to the question. Pin Down does the same job as a longer Pin to PAP by the nature it promotes a slower transition however, pin down reduces diff significantly so why wouldn’t you just get the diff ball you want and go with a longer pin to pap pin up rather than risk the diff issue on pin down ?

Storm articles for reference:

Well one example I can give right off the bat was with my Radical Fix.  Since I already owned a More Cash that I drilled max flare, max int diff pin up I needed a smoother oiler (that I could also use on house shot) so in that case and especially with that ball going pin down reduced the diff (and actually made the ball symmetric, pin up makes it an asym, Mo Pinel black magic) and made the ball smoother but the strong cover stock could still handle a puddle.  That layout also had a 5.5" pin to pap (35 x 5 ½" x 75 CG 1 ¼" pos. of Grip Center Balance Hole at PAP ).  So sometimes you may want to go both with a strong cover stock but admittedly that shape shifter core is not your usual ball.

Thanks for the reply. Pin down on a longer pin to pap would be different further. So what does this layout do ?

Don’t get too wrapped around the axle with layouts, it just isn’t all that important in the grand scheme of things. Keep it simple with a few layouts that work well for you and try to matchup covers to the condition you’re bowling on.

pin up is more angular then pin down for me. In general I like pin down layouts with symmetric core balls.
The harder I try the harder they fall

+1 on not sweating layouts too much.  Honestly for my style layout difference disappear in the noise of surface changes, oil transition, bowler inconsistency, etc.  Still to see for yourself what a smoother pin down long pin to pap lower diff symmetric looks like compared to a pin up, max flare (diff) shorter pin to pap, much sharper layout (basically becomes an asym ball) watch the following video.  Please keep in mind this ball (and this video, human bowler would probably not see as great a differences) are specifically designed to maximize the difference and even then its not as great as one would think.

Pin Up 60 x 3 ¾" x 30 CG 1 ¼" pos. of Grip Center, Balance Hole on VAL 1 ½" below PAP
vs
Pin Down 35 x 5 ½" x 75 CG 1 ¼" pos. of Grip Center, Balance Hole at PAP
