Any experienced drillers out there to offer advice?
« on: September 01, 2011, 12:51:59 AM »
Looking for advice on drilling a new ball (Rogue Cell)

OK.  I have experimented with drilling quite a few balls and I am looking for someone with drilling expertise can tell me why some of my drilling patterns are working for me and some not before I drill up another new ball that I just picked up.

I am a tweener, high track, medium speed (14-15 mph), slightly rev dominate, approx 45 degree axis rotation and approximately 15 degrees tilt with a 5 12> 1/2^ PAP.    I struggle with consistency on my Nano and Mutant Cell because of the shorter pins mostly and sem to do well with all my other balls.    I have the best control on scores on my Theory albiet I have a relatively weak drill on the ball (aka Pete Weber drill I beleive).

I want to put a controlled drill on a 3 inch pin, CG left of MB new Rogue Cell that I just picked up (not looking for a flippy back end but want to keep revs into the pin deck).   I am thinking of a pin over ring finger or under the ring finger and MB in the gripline or slightly positive (this works out to approx a 4 3/8 x 5 x 2 1/2 or 65 x 4 x 35).   Can anyone with drilling experience read into my arsenal and tell me what might work best for me?

Thanks

MK

I have very similar specs to you. I have nothing with the pin closer than 5" to the axis, just can't get it down the lane. My favorite layout on asyms is 6" pin x3.5 mb x3"from val (skid/flip). I drill mostly symmetrical with layouts like 60x5x35 (strong arc) 50x5-6x70 (early roll with control) and 6"x 5"x 3" (length with some backend) from val.

I have noted that for me, if I drill an asym with the pin and mb equidistant from my axis, especially with stronger pins, I get a rather lazy, rolling  reaction, I usually have different distances (5x6,  6x4, etc)

As to your question about the Rogue Cell, it depends how early you want it to hook and how strong you want it, then I can make a further suggestion.  I do have a Cell pearl that I drilled 65x5x70 and it is relatively early and strong for a pearl, but doesn't hockey stick on the back end.

Hope this helps you.

Thanks Cobalt -

Since everything I own currently is drilled for back end, I think I like the idea of a Hybrid ball with a stronger midlane read (emphais on control).    I also like the idea of drilling a ball that is not going to be so reactive to a dry  breakpoint or carrydown.

I have been told to consider a pin down to increase midlane read but I would have to add a P3 hole to keep the track out of my fingerholes and increase the bowtie.  Not sure If I can do that with a 3" pin as it puts the CG on top of the Thumb hole.   Thoughts?

That's kind of how my Cell pearl is drilled. Most likely, you will not need to move the flare, as long as the pin is not too low and a decent distance from the axis (4.5" or more)" Perhaps a 70* angle to the VAL. Also, having a pin-CG distance that long may require a low hole just to get legal statics. How much topweight does the ball have, how far left is the CG, and are you right or left handed?

On the balls that you didn't like the layouts on did you try adjusting their ball surface at all?

It might not be a bad thing to try.

If shorter pins aren't working it might be from the ball using up its energy too soon.

Throw some polish on them.

If it gets you some more backend pop but still not what you want.

Adjust the surface either lower grit then polish or higher grit then polish.

I rarely keep the ball at the box finish.

Just too hard to keep it at a consistent finish.

So I experiment til I get them how I like them then I make a note and put it in with my accessory pouch.

That way I have a record I can rely on rather than my memory.

Something you might try is a drilling 30deg x 35deg val 4 1/4 pin distance.  This will read midlane and still have a strong backend. This layout works well with tweeners but on strong cover balls a slight touch of polish will be needed to keep it from burning up on short patterns.
