Anyone use Grip-loc?
« on: April 24, 2009, 07:34:39 AM »
Anyone on here use grip-loc?  Seems simple enough to install without too much to stock, but is it strong...in the sense of breaking, and also security of not feeling it wiggle or feel loose?  Just curious, never known anyone thats tried it.
Thanks

I've installed them for almost 3 years now and they are pretty strong.  They will start to wiggle after extended use but its just as easy to replace the inner insert after they wear out but that is like after a year or two use.  They wear if you keep switching back and forth repeatedly like frame to frame, they weren't designed like that.  there is a slight gap between the outer sleeve and inner insert but once you get used to them it doesnt bother me.  I recently tried out the Turbo Switchgrip to compare and those are a tighter fit then griplocs and they have recently upgraded the material to hold stronger then the first ones.  They install the same way but you need a 1 1/2" bit for switchgrip where Griplocs uses a 1 3/8" bit which most shops carry.  I like both.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the reply roto...do you use the slow cure glue, or do you use epoxy(stuff i use on custom thumbs..molds)?  Also was lookin at your equipment, how does your mystic compare to your paradigm(the best ball ever made in my opinion!)Just curious...thanks again

I like to use a combo of Turbo Slow Zip and Loctite Superglue (the gel type) and I also make sure I drill the hole just deep enough so that the outer sleeve bottoms out because I've had a few sink on me if I drill them too deep.

I love my Paradigm of all my equipment except for my new Pin Slasher and Playmaker.  That Mystic was an experiment.  I might throw it in a tourney next weekend and then try to sell it as I am slowly switching to Ebonite now.

i used them for a short while when i worked in a pro shop but after loosing my insert in the middle of the hoinkee i decided to go back to regular slugs. they are easy to install and sometimes they crack from what i've seen on some of the people i installed them for

I dont get why anyone would use grip loc as an interchangeable thumb system. Its very expensive and no where near as secure as Vise IT and Switch Grip. I feel that they move around so much. It's also very difficult to get the exact same depth ball to ball as you have to do it by site unless you create your own stopper/depth gauge on the drill.

Vise it is the best and most affordable.
Switch grip has had more breakages but the new c3 model is a lot more secure.
Grip loc would be the last one I'd use if i had a choice.

boy MTD300, i dont need a fancy depth stopper for my drill press.  I drill the hole down to about 2 1/2" then dry fit the outer sleeve so that I can see how much I have left to drill out in order for it to bottom out.  I've also tried Switchgrip and don't need a depth stopper for those either.  Last I checked Vise Its start at $500 and Switch grips are now around $350.  When we bought the proshop kit for griplocs 3 years ago it was around $300.

They have gone up alot since Rickie at Lane #1 bought them and jacked up the price, but now Tom G, the designer of Griplocs, is starting to make and sell them again cause he was pissed that Lane #1 doubled the price.

I've had ones that I drilled 3 years ago that still work fine with slight signs of wear.  Besides, the Vise It system has about 500 parts and looks very complicated to install.  We won't be getting it so I wont have a chance to try it.  All my customers love the Griplocs.

Thats my 2 cents.

It looks complicated to install, but it's not really.  My ball driller tells me all the time how much easier/i] the Vise IT is to install correctly than the Grip-Locs, Thom's Thum, and Turbo Switchgrips he has used before.  They always fit flush in the ball, they always stay securely glued in, and never break.  And it takes him less time and effort to install the Vise IT than it would for him to drill, shape, and sand a normal thumb slug for me.

I use them and love them, I have one ball/sleeve that wiggles a little but to be honest it does not bother me. I used them because the 1 1/2" size fits my big fat thumb the best, and it seems to be my proshops preferred system.

I have several customers along with myself using the GripLoc and the only downfall is the one that has been stated above.....they wiggle a little.

I have engineered a cure for this however....I put a wrap of thin electrical tape around the top of the inner and a piece or 2 between the grooves around the bottom and it's all good.

I have been looking intot he Vise IT and the SwitchGrip systems as well. I like Turbo products but the 1-1/2" bit you need to install Switch Grip doesn't seem like my press would get along with it as smoothly as I would like. Just dont know if my press will run it without wobbling...

For the simplicity of it the Grip Loc is great. I don't change inserts much during the game but I like the ability to swap the thumbhole from ball to ball.

To clarify Roto4evers statement. The Vise IT kit is $399 with 24 slugs and a BUNCH of other items and drill bits for both 1 1/4 and 1 3/8 thumb inserts. If you go to Viseinserts.com, click on the IT system and there is a picture of the kit and all that comes with it! I have to agree with Dan Belcher as far as ease and speed of installation. I have installed over 130 so far and no one has asked to take them out, which I offer if not completely satisfied. I will be glad to answer any question to the best of my ability on the VISE "IT"

I have been using the grip-loc system for 3 years now
and have had no problem with it other then a little
wiggle with one of the inserts.
However i have needed some outer sleeves for a while now.
And i refuse to pay lane-1 the price they are asking for
the sleeves.
If anyone knows how to get in touch with tom.g the designer
for grip-loc i would like to get in touch with him to see if
he would sell me some at the original prices.
