Are grips/inserts brand important?
« on: April 30, 2007, 05:34:13 PM »
Sorry I don't know where to post this particular question.

I wanted to see what kind of grips everyone uses, if any.
My pro shop carries contour grips, but I noticed alot of pros or others uses vise grips. There are so many types of vise grips, I don't know which one to try. Any suggestion? Or are grips generally the same overall?

I personally use vise grips and I love them. Although I do not have any experience with any other types besides Tenth Frame, I can't really tell you what you'd like. All I do know is that grips all do the same thing, although they can certainly feel much different.  Tenth Frame and some of the Turbo grips I have felt are a little harder than the Vise.  Hopefully someone else will be a bit more helpful, good luck.

You will get the same type of response as you would about what ball company is better. Currently my thumb slugs are from vise I have used others due to putting tape in I can't see any difference. As far as grips go I can't truthfully answer since I don't use them.

Thanks!!!

I had a chance to touch one of the vise grip. Compare to contour, its relatively harder in terms of material. But I have no idea what kind of difference it'll make on a ball, thats why I asked.

I've decided to try, but there are like 3 or 4 different grips within the brand Vise itself. Thats why its very confusing lol!

Contours (I do use them) are softer than Vise Grips (I have used them) but not by a lot. I used VG with no real problems for a long while interspersed with Contours, which my pro shop carries as their standard. For consistency's sake I stuck with Contours.

One big advantage VGs have is they make them in half or in between sizes, in 64 ths of an inch.

ALso VGs are slightly larger than Contours, in the 25/32" and 3/4" sizes that I use. The VGs are also slightly longer than COntours, so my driller had to drill the hole deeper. He got that wrong a few times, but I had to remind him that I had brought different brand grip. (I supply my inserts to him.)

If you use ovals (that is, not the ones with a 1/4" pitch to them), most of the VGs come with ovals on one side.

In the shop, I am partial to Vise finger inserts. Hands down, they win.

For slugs, Turbo 2-color Urethanes are the easiest to work on.

Charlest, you can easily cut a little off the inserts with scissors instead of drilling the holes deeper.  You'll never know the difference once they're in the ball.

i think it all boils down to personal preference. i tried tenth frame inserts-----way too soft and mushy. i've also tried turbo-2-n-1 grips and their sof-t model was too soft and mushy as well. i've used vise grips since 1997 and get the best feel and choice of sizes and colors.

I agree.  I've noticed that Vise are bigger (and harder) than whatever my old driller was using (I think they were either 10th Frame or Contour), at least for my sizes - 11/16 and 21/32.  I can actually get my middle finger down to the knuckle with Vise grips.  The other grips I could only get about 3/4 of the way in, and the next size up was too big, so I've been jamming my fingers for the past 3 years!

I also prefer the powerlifts - they help those of us that are rev challenged!

I've bowled my best with 10th frame powerlifts.

Their super soft feel seemed to let the ball stay on my fingers FOREVER during my release allowing me to sometines make slight adjustments to my release to compensate for slight differences in armswing path.

Contours are almost as soft and seem to have a similar effect.

For me the Vise are too hard.  But they do have that 1/64 size adjustment advantage.  Most others(all) are 1/32 difference between sizes.

Does the ball need to be redrilled to fit a Vise grip properly then? Or opened up.... ?? It would be less trouble if I can just change them myself.

Used to use Turbo, but didn't like them as they tore my fingers up.  Stopped using inserts all together for years.

Just recently bought a new arsenal and decided to try VISE Inserts.  I love them.

Oh, sure. But my driller gets all mad at himself when he forgets to drill deeper for the longer insert. It's kind of funny. Then either one of us does get out the scissor and cuts them off. He never put it back on the drill to drill it deeper & I wouldn;t ask him to. I use the VG o/po grips and never use the power lift side; so cutting into it is not a problem. Thanks anyway.

I use Vise, most my customers use Vise, I do carry a few Turbos for the 3 customers that use them.  They know that I only keep the sizes they use in stock so if they want to "try a different color" for a new ball, I need warning to get them.

I do think it's more a personal preference than most will admit, JMO.
