To locate the PAP: Have the customer use a ball that has little flare -- a plastic spare ball is perfect. Clean the surface of the ball and have him throw it using his normal strike ball release in an area of the lane that has a lot of oil. Locate the oil ring (if you've used a ball that flares, select the ring closest to the thumb hole unless the ball has an abnormal layout), and mark it in the area between the thumb and finger holes with a grease pencil. For a right handed bowler -- place the ball with the thumb hole down and the finger holes up. The Armadillo has an "axis finder" side with a notched area. Lay the Armadillo on the ball with this side on the right (for a left hander, the notch would be on the left side). Now locate the "track line" on the Armadillo that matches the marked track on the ball. The PAP is located at the "axis finder" notch. Mark it by drawing a line along one side and intersecting that line with one from within the notch.
To lay a ball out: let's use a 5" x 3" layout for example. The "track lines" on the Armadillo are marked with inches away from the PAP ("axis finder" notch). Line up the 5" line over the pin AND the 3" line over the cg (or MB).
NOTE: on some balls this will be impossible to do, for example a ball with 1" pin out. This means that layout is impossible to use on this ball.
The PAP is located at the end of the "axis finder" notch. Proceed with layout as normal.
To draw a true 90 degree line: Draw the first line, for example the grip centerline. Locate the point where you want the perpendicular line drawn (the grip center). Line up the dashed line on the Armadillo (this line is the full circumference of the ball, or a full roller track) with the centerline such that the edge of the Armadillo passes over the grip center. Draw the perpendicular line along the edge.
The Armadillo can also be used to quickly determine axis tilt. I worked this use out and posted it earlier. Right now I'm tired of typing, but if anyone is interested I'll find the procedure and repost it. -- JohnP
