need drilling help - pin axis???
« on: January 31, 2006, 01:21:10 PM »
got an older gent at the end of his rope.  slower speeed track player.  very accurate with slower spped and lowwer revs.

here's the problem:  the strong stuff hooks too early, even polished, drilled moderately weak.  got him a dry r groove but now it is squirrely as one skids the other ball hooks early.  he is accurate but man is that dry r funky.  no hit or carry at all.

what's left for me to try with him??  would a pin axis give him the smooth arcing track shot he so desires.  I have a silver streak solid polished up that I could have plugged for him and have it drilled axis.  where do I put the pin and cg.  It is a 3 inch pin, moderate top wt.  His axis is right at 5 inches over and 1/2 up.

please make any suggestions on drillings or ball types that would help him.

You could also try to buff or sand the Dry/R a bit to make it read the lane a bit earlier and smoother. Won't change much of the overall hook, but it might deliver a more controllable result. A 1.500 or 2.000 grit surface could be worth a try, or, if you have access to it, a finish with a white Trizact pad (Cerium Oxyde) that leaves an almost glossy finish but without a polish, just the bare surface.

If he is really slow, I would try and find something with a low diff.

am using a big rig....highly polished/glossed....pin axis....dead in the dry area....it's out scoring all my other stuff at this one house...no matter what I use or how it's drilled or how I turn it...

for example....have another big rig....sanded to 800....pin high leverage.....can swing the lane or just a small swing...can hit the pocket every shot....but no carry....

so pin axis....just might work for him....certainly can't hurt...has helped me....let's put it another way...have not shot less than 700 for a full set w/it yet.....and he should be able to play dead in the dry....

exactly my thoughs too Jabs...  I think urethane would give the look he's desiring...  smooth arcing, no over/ender...and still have power to hit and carry.  One of our best local house bowlers throws a blue hammer exclusively...  his reasoning is that if he can average 230 with a 15 yr old urethane ball, why buy something else?

I have a pin axis drilling on a columbia drive....almost perfect for playing out in dry on a SEVERE wet/dry(no flare).  Goes real long and then makes a rounded smooth move but a little much.

I put a reaction enhancing weighthole out past pap 1 1/2 inches.  Am going to plug and put weighthole on PAP!  I'll get back with results!

Pin on axis...cg back about 3 inches towards thumb.  Mass bias under thumb!

I drilled a ball pin axis for guy who had the problem of too much hook but didn't like to use weaker equipment. I plugged his big time solid and drilled pin axis. CG is in the center of his grip, the ball weighed up with no side weight. I would use a solid ball so the ball would at least roll a little sooner.

I think with the dry/R you might can hit the 2 figure 8 places on the ball with scotch brite and then maybe hit the very bottom couple rings on his flareif he has very much flare so the ball will still get through the heads good....Wouldnt hurt to try anyway, works very well with my stuff...

I believe that not having a uniform surface prep is illegal per USBC rules.  I am not positive about this though.

I am not a driller and I am far from shameful.  I'm a pretty nice guy actually, thank you.

confused that you received so many responses to this. first may i ask..are you the person that is suppose to be drilling this ball for this "senior gent" and asking people how to best to it when YOU should know how to perform an intelligent accessment of drill patterns for you customers.  really, this is shameful!!!!

It is shameful to come to a forum to ask people for a possible solution for a problem his is unsure of???  That's what this site is for.  There's nothing wrong with utilizing all resources (such as this site) at your disposal.

dstanek, I think you should try that drilling for him. It will roll, but should still get length with a very controllable arc on the back. I would use a solid resin symetrical core & adjust the coverstock as needed.
