Assymetrical vs Symetrical, carry %
« on: January 11, 2006, 07:33:57 AM »
Over the past few years, I've heard people claim that Assy. carry better than sym. balls.  What I've found, for me, is they carry great but are very condition specific.  Recent, assy. balls I've owned are:

Red Pin Zone Classic
Impulse Zone
Ravage
Regular Zone classic
Crimson Executioner

They were all very condition specific for me, the RPZC and the CE are the only ones I still own.  The RPZC is great if there is NO oil down lane, how often is that??  The Crimson is probably the best assy. ball I've owned.  Although, I believe it has a very low psa, it can be used quite often.

Symetricals just seem to fit my game the best.  I carry better with them across a broad range of conditions, where that isn't possible with most assy. for me.

Brunswicks Vapor Zone looks very good.  The problem being, I can't justify the cost of the ball when I know my history with assy. balls.

Thoughts?

Andrew

well i am happy to see that you still have and use two of the balls i sold you, i knew the crimson would be a good choice. You know how many balls i own and have owned on the right lane conditions it never makes much of a difference imo.

I have shot 250 plus with an ebonite low flare stinger and a rotogrip ultra sonic on the right lane conditions, i find that assymetrical works better on oil balls. So for me the morich and newer storm made balls with strong mass bias like the new passion or my new favorite the centrifugal mass ball. On lighter oil balls i cannot see any ball reactions differences probably because most lighter oil balls have low mb anyway.

Btw get yourself a rotogrip ultra sonic or a rampage and lose that rpzc, you will notice much improved scoring on those fried head nights.

I don't feel that asymmetrical balls carry any better than symmetrical balls.  That is a myth!

Carry is just entry angle and having the right match up.  Cores won't matter that much if any.  Example:  Symm cores tend to be more controllable than assy cores.  HOWEVER...my Crimson Executioner is one of my highest scoring balls I have ever owned.  Considering I am a high rev player, you would almost think the opposite should be true.  I agree with Chitown.  It is a myth and carry % is relative to each individual bowler and the lane conditions at hand.

I've bowled just as well on the right conditions with asymmetrical equipment as I have with symmetrical equipment. Depends on the match ups that I see with the lane conditions, lane surface and what the operator of the bowling ball can do. There have been times when I've bowled out of state tournaments where I bowl in different houses for different events- one house I may need to use a symmetrical, early rolling ball, another house I may need an asymmetrical skid/flip type look to the lanes.

I think these days you need to know your equipment and how it will react on different lane conditions/surfaces so that you can make the right decision quicker than ever if you want to stay near the head of the pack. I have some equipment that can work well in a variety of houses (Diablo, Absolute Inferno, Havoc) and then I have other pieces that are condition specific (Slash, VP2).

There is no better carry between them. It is only a difference in ball reaction setup possibilities. If there is any better carry effect, I supoose it comes from the individual fact that an asymmetrical ball might match the game of a specific bowler better, resulting in better results or carry.

But saying that asym's generally carry better is IMHO a myth.

Good topic.

I was thinking about this recently and realized all of my honor scores and most of my high series came with symmetrical balls.  I think there is a message there for me.

andrew,

does your driller know your game well, and understand 'strong' asymetrical drill concepts and possibilities?

If not, that may be one of the factors.

I have 3 strong asym balls, and all 3 are predictable, readable and I can pick them up and throw them on any condition ...witin reason
