homemade bevel sander - anyone??

anyone know how to make a simple homemade bevel sander??  I was thinking of using somehting with my high speed drill and buying the small circular sanding discs. Just cannot figure out what to use for the bit part that would attach the discs.  any ideas???  thanks

If you are only going to utilize it for home use why do you even need one?  I mean a simple piece of sand paper and a knife will work wonders.  If you want to purchase an attachement for your drill I would get a small (~3/4") drum sanding attachement for opening up the holes and just finish sand them by hand (doesn't take very long).

I've never heard of anyone trying to construct their own bevel sander, and I've been at this a long time.

I'm surprised anyone would look at making one of these at home.  We sell bevel sanders at Ebonite for $49.95, and I have to believe it would be near impossible to even find a motor and fab something up for under this.  If you're interested in purchasing one and saving the hassle, send me an e-mail.  Good luck!

I think Kingcranker (I know it was aBR.com member) actually made the attachments and was selling them on this website for a while.

if you have a dremel, I think KingCranker sells shafts that make a dremel into a bevel sander for $10. I have one and it works really well.

If you do it with a drill.Just get a small diameter (1/8" or so) bolt about 6" long  plus the nut and 2 small starwashers.

put 1 starwasher on the bolt.
then put on the sanding disk.
then put on the other starwasher.
then put on the nut.
tighten it all to the bolt head.
stick end in drill and sand away.

You can also make one out of a small sewing machine motor.( or similar small electic motor with a long shaft.).

The piece that holds the sanding disk is called a mandrel.

you can do it with the dremels little mandrel if all your doing is the bevel at the top of the hole. If you want to go down the hole you'll need a longer shaft.

If you want to get really "ghetto," you can probably go to the hardware store, pick up a piece of threaded rod and two nuts (to hold the paper in place), some sheets of 80 grit sandpaper and have at it.

Anyways, they are nice to have - my step-dad calls it a milkshake maker.

$50 for an Ebonite bevel sander?  That's a pretty good price....I haven't seen
them for under $70.

Oh, and you might be able to rig something up using a gun/rifle kit like this one: http://www.copsplus.com/prodnum1933.php

You should be able to pick one up for around $10-15 at Wal-mart.  The aluminum rod reminds me of that tool somebody on here was selling for the dremel.  Not sure what size screw you would need to hold the sand paper on.

Basically all you are looking for is a long rod/screw to attach to the drill and a way to attach the sand paper to the other end, right?  I mean, that's basically all the bevel sander is.  Not sure about the RPM requirements or what your drill will do, but my bevel sanders are 5,000 and 10,000 RPMs.
