DP3: Straight From The Press. Tips on Low Track layouts(w/pics)
« on: February 26, 2005, 02:06:03 PM »
I decided to ditch all of my equipment in favor of a more relaxed fit, natural fingertips(no inserts), and a Thumbslug(no previous use of a thumbslug in my equipment).  I got a few NIB balls off of a friend and here is how I layed them out and punched them up.

Specs
Right Handed Tweener
Rev Rate: 330rpms
Speed: 16.0-16.5mph(at 45 feet)
PAP: 3 3/4 right, 3/4 up
Track Diameter: 10 1/4 inches

Span: 4 5/8ths cut to cut
Middle Finger: 11/16ths, Pitch 1/8 reverse, 5/16ths left lateral
Ring Finger: 21/32ths, Pitch 1/8 reverse, 51/6ths right lateral
Thumb: 59/64ths, Pitch 3/16 reverse, 3/32 left lateral

With my low PAP measurements this should provide as a guide to other low trackers looking for a desired reaction that they could find from layouts detremential to a higher track player.

Track Champ 16lbs 3 inch pin
http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/wetoddimage.wtdr/wODAyMTQzNnM0MTNkZmQzMXk1NDE%3D.jpg
What I wanted with this ball was to maximize the potential of the strong core(.054 diff) without creating early burnout.  I went with a 4 1/4 x 3 3/4 drill without a weighthole to give me strong midlane revs with a continuous arc.  The early flare should smooth out the backend and create a big swooping hook that should work well in heavier oil and cut through carrydown.

Inferno 16lbs 3 1/2 inch pin
http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/wetoddimage.wtdr/wODAyMTQ1NnM0MTNkZmQzMXk1NDE%3D.jpg
This was a used ball with a huge span.  I had to double slug the thumb to get it in the range of my span.  The first Inferno I had(which I reviewed) wanted to skate 40 feet then do a huge cartwheel across the lane.  I figured with this one being set up 3 1/2 x 2 1/2 to my axis point measurements, I could create a very early read with a slow arcing motion to even wet-drys and tame down fresh backends which I normally struggle to find control on.

Tornado Seafoam Sanded, 16lbs 4 3/4 inch pin
http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/wetoddimage.wtdr/wODAyMTQ0NnM0MTNkZmQzMXk1NDE%3D.jpg
The Tornados have a decievingly strong core that wants to spin up very fast with the pin in a leverage position.  I drilled this to fit a niche where I need a piece that will read very true in a sanded state for tougher conditions, but not give up recovery and finish on the backend.  This has one of my favorite coverstocks of all time(Supertack Resin) so I wanted to go with a long pin to PAP placement.  This is a 5 1/4 x 4 drilling for me which has 5/8ths negative weight.  I expect an even midlane controllable arc from this ball.

Power Groove Pearl 2-3 inch pin
http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/wetoddimage.wtdr/wODAyMTQ2NnM0MTNkZmQzMXk1NDE%3D.jpg
I drilled this as a solution to late shift/broken down conditions where you need something to float through the heads, but still draw enough recovery to kick out the corners in slight carrydown.  I went with a 4 x 3 drill, no weighthole, so I can get deep inside and really whack it, getting my revrate up around the 370 range and have a ball that will float through the heads and midlanes and really turn the corner from inside.

Here is a pic of the finished product

I may be drilling more balls within the next week and I hope this helps for those low tracker out there that need to decide on specific layouts that aren't on most companies' drilling sheets.

I have not seen a chump I mean Champ in a long time. Man I hated that ball. Hope it works well for you. A lot of people liked it just did not like mine at all.

Well the hammer stuff was a phase.  I still like the equipment and plan on getting more of them once I get used to the new feel.  Getting two of my hammers stolen was a bummer, so I sold the rest instead of going through the hassle of plugging and redrilling them all to try a new fit.  These are almost experiment balls until I find what cover/core/numbers match up for me.  I've only thrown the Powergroove so far and I really like the new feel.  I might be able to get some videos soon too.

to often players/drillers are afraid or hesitant to place pins in the negative side of the ball. Glad to see you are not.

I am also a low tracker and my rev rate is similar to yours.

i have used pin placements often inside my middle or ring finger, and find the reactions are very good, typically pins too high for me skid too long or don't handle carrydown at all.

I personally love to take high diff balls and place the pin under my middle finger.

I did that with the Champ and I can safely say this thing hooks so much I probaly won't be able to use it on ANYTHING.  The Seafoam Tornado gives me a reaction that is just simply amazing.  The color pattern combined with all the lope in the midlane makes it look great going down the lane.  In the midlanes you can see it revving up very hard like it's "charging up" for an explosive reaction, but it doesn't turn the corner until late, like 45-50 feet and it moves hard and continuous.  Hopefully I can get a good video soon.

be really cool to see the look it gives you, lol and get some players to ask " are you left handed??"

I get that once in a while with some balls.

DP--Thanks for putting up pics and showing people that "pin above bridge" means nothing.  It is so difficult to explain to people that putting the pin on the "negative" side of the ball works for low trackers.  My father-in-law is a low tracker, his PAP is 3 right and 1 1/2 up.  He doesn't understand label drillings are basically pin on pap.  I am trying to teach him though.

No problem guys.  I'm glad I could help.  I don't have as much experience drilling as a King Of The Mill, T-God, or some of the other more respected users since I've only been drilling for a little over 2 years.  But I do understand weightblock position and how it is all relevant over it's relation to your PAP coordinates and not the generic layouts provided with a sheet that comes with the ball.

The main reason I did this is because I had some quarrels with users who have bought ball from me(won't mention any names) and they've asked me:
"Well how does this ball react"
and I'll say:
"Well, for me, it's has a great read of the midlane and a strong recovery with alot of angle on the backend.  It'd be great as the lanes break down and you need to get inside and need some deep recovery"

And when they get the ball they'll say something like:
"You screwed me, this ball is drilled for a left hander! It goes straight"

Then I'd have to explain how what might be an aggressive drill for me will be a weak drill for them since most people's PAP is in the 5"+ range, so what could be 4x4 for me may be something like 6x5 for them.

If you know you track low by nature and struggle with acheiving a ball reaction you desire, do not hesitate to bring this up with your driller.  I know we are one of the few pro shops in the area that will not hesitate to drill someone a negative pin ball that is a low tracker.  But that doesn't necessarily happen out of "Pro Shop Negligence" but merely because the Operators of a certain shop have not seen all of their customers bowl or do not have an accurate PAP measurement for their customers.

Always remember, if you're going into a pro shop that's not connected to a bowling center where it's much easier to map out your PAP, bring in a ball with a fresh track so the operator can use the Armadillo or such tool to accurately find your PAP.

I had that happen once.  My father-in-law had a Ti Messenger drilled with the pin next to the middle finger.  When I tried to sell it for him, people kept saying "its drilled lefty".  So folks just don't get it.
