Backup Bowler - need drilling assistance
« on: September 06, 2012, 08:40:06 AM »
My female teammate is a backup bowler righthanded with good ball speed, throwing 15 lbs.  Her roll on the ball resembles that of a full roller.  Her setup has her holding the ball with her thumb @ 1 o'clock.  I have attempted to get her to hold the ball with more of a suitcase grip and let her pushaway get her hand into a more natural position, to no avail.

Looking to get her some new equipment / drilling which would help give her a little more sideroll and open her area up a little.  Any suggestions or thoughts.

There isn't any equipment or drilling that will increase sideroll.  That is created by the operator...with a backup ball it is tough to create much axis rotation as the hand does not naturally turn that way very well.

Is she having trouble getting the ball to continue downlane?...meaning is the ball rolling out for her?  What issue is she having specifically?

My first suggestion is to take her to a good pro shop and get her axis point measured.  Mike Fagan "looks" like a high tracker but in reality he has a 3.5 axis point.  Russell is right though in that since a backup release is not "natural", it is difficult to achieve a good amount of axis rotation and "sideroll".  Side roll is not as important as you might think.  We just had a guy in our city roll his 100th 300 game and he doesnt have much axis rotation at all; maybe 30-40 degrees.  Main thing though is get that axis point checked out before anything.  After that, then we can pinpoint exactly what type of ball would work best for her.
