balance hole question
« on: February 11, 2008, 09:39:00 AM »
So I drilled my Wrath Dead Flush up 5x3 pin up. Ended up with 1/2 finger and 5/8 positive no hole needed. This ball is very irratic. If I were to take it down to say 0 side with a hole on the PAP wouldn't this take all that undesirable ball motion away? I know I've read that static weights really do nothing, I was looking more for the advice on the hole really.

No, it may or it may not.

Try sanding it to 4000 grit first (basically taking off the polish). It can always be returned to its factory polished state.

As an alternative to its 4000 grit + polish, you can also try 2000 grit plus polish.

By placing the weight hole on the pap you really have no effect on flare and doubt you would see any difference in reactions.

Charlest is correct about changing the surface to eliminate the over-under you see.  Knock the shine off to add some surface to help the ball read the lane earlier.  This should reduce the over-under you are seeing.  Small changes in cover prep can make big differences in on lane performance.

Also weight holes 2.5" or so BELOW the PAP or BEYOND the PAP will make the ball flare earlier and more, but the hole needs to be deep, about 2.5" and wide-ish, like 7/8" or more. The purpose is to affect the core's shape, not to remove static weights. I don't know if you can remove enough weight to do that. You should check with you driller are this. Do not be afraid of getting to 1/4 -1/2 ounce of negative side weight.

FYI I have 5/8 ounces negative side weight in a recent asymmetric ball and it seems to NOT affect the ball reaction at all. The ball hits and hooks.

I like where the ball moves on the lane, I'd just like to have more of a "J" shape to it as opposed the the > it has now.

Are you saying you want more skid/snap?

If so:
The things we were saying will give you more and earlier hook, more arc, and less snap.

You need the opposite of what we have bene saying: mor epolish or a flare decreasing hole, not a flare increasing hole.

If not,
then our advice stands.

haha, less snap!! It's just really violent with my ball speed and revs. I'll toy around with the surface a little and see what I can come up with.

Absolute, I was always under the impression that holes drilled in a ball had to the same diameter all the way to the bottom. Please correct me on this if I am wrong.

Thanks for responding Absolute. I was trying to think where I got that idea from but can't. Must have been something I just assumed. Sure does make it easier to drill the thumb and fingers deeper when you can just pop in a drill a little smaller than the original hole.

Taking out the side weight will give it more of a "J" shape. It'll roll earlier and snap less at the end, if that's what you're looking for. =:^D

Well I went today to have the ball re-slugged and then had it re-weighed to find out what size hole I'd need. Well when it was initially weighed I was told it had 5/8 side. Turns out it had 1.5 ounces of side Well I had it taken down to 0 and I'll report back with my findings....
