Ball/ Drill Suggestion For Specific Shot
« on: December 14, 2006, 12:15:52 PM »
In search of an area on the lanes where I can play with minimal moves for the night so I want to try something else.

I am wanting to try playing an inside line somewhere around 25 to 15.

Looking for suggestions on a ball and layout to use.

I know what I think I want to try, just want to see what you guys think.

Thanks guys!!!

I'll be glad to answer, but I want to make sure I understand the question.  I interpret the question as "laying the ball down on the 25th board, crossing the arrows at the 15th boards."  Is this what you intend?  Others may read this as crossing the arrows at the 25th board, peaking the ball at the 15th board.

Which is it?

let's look at it this way.....5th arrow to 3rd arrow so 25 at the arrows to 15 at the breakpoint.

I mean after all...would shoot a deer at 400 yds w/a shotgun?

but since I'm the one that needs to grow up...you probably would.

Doug,

There are obviously several other factors going into the equation here (as your friend points out), but I'll be glad to make some general observations.

For my game, when I start playing those kinds of launch angles, I prefer to use balls with lower degree layouts, such as 25-45 degrees.  I typically combine a medium strength ball, such as a Whirlwind or RXS300, and use the shiny coverstock to get it down the lane.  I'll normally use a medium to longer pin distance, such as 5" - 5 3/4" from my pap.  But then I use the smaller degree layout to move the mass bias or preferred spin axis out towards my pap.  This gives the ball a stronger move downlane (again for my game) and gets the ball through the pin deck properly.

Just some suggestions.  Good luck!

Thanks Jeff...that's the find of info I was looking for.

When you have your pro shop in a center such as mine with my type of clientele you tend to get stagnant in your thinking and I was hoping for some "outsiede the box" thinking.

I was actually thinking something "weaker" like the Ebonite Ice. It's not weak but it's very long and can be flippy with the dry backends we see here.

A bit more lane info...we have 40 year old wood that screams on the backend. They were resurfaced 2 years ago but the lane man did a rather unique sanding job when he pulled finish over the summer..did something to the outsides so they don't snap over like last year so it makes playing the deep inside shot tough. They use 'the magic' Prodigy oil that "doesn't carry down"...yeah right. The shot has been crowned some away from teh top hat we had a couple of years ago but there's still a decent cliff at 8. There is very little taper from the front of the applied oil to the end of the pattern. They run about 55 units in the center. Oil is applied 32 feet and buffed out to 38. It's still rather short in my opinion. The backends are very crispy as they are stripped and oiled everyday.

Oddly enough I bowl better on our scratch patterns than I do on the house shot. Go figure.

Doug, I know very little about what Lane 1 ball for what, or any other balls for that matter, but I have never been able to move left and throw right until I tried it with my Enriched Uranium yesterday. Here is my post if you missed it. I don't know what this ball and drilling would do for you. Or maybe you've even tried it, I don't know.

will be constructive...good topic...yes I came across rather poorly last night

jeff 450 revs...18 mph

doug 300 revs...15.5 mph....behind back of ball

I would recommend to Doug something jeff doesn't care for...but will fit Doug's "A" game to a tee.

Pin High ebonite...NO LIMIT...ie...pin above ring finger...cg kicked out at 45 degrees...

the polish, pin high, and your roll will get the length...the extremely high differential will get you hit/carry you need to score w/that kind of roll...and to be honest....think that's by far the best if you want to stick to personal A game.

Enjoy...again...sorry for unnecessary jabs.

Hey Doug,

I thought you were a big fan of the Cobalt Pearl. Shouldn't need anything exotic to do the job. Your basic CG out drill on a bomb should get the job done nicely.

I too need to apologize sammy...I have had a terrible last 72 hours and I came across very unprofessional...so I am sorry for that.

I have thrown the No Limit and really liked the ball at the demo day. I may give that a shot.

Nova...I really do like the Cobalt pearl but the ball is too strong. The cover is too grabby and the core is too strong. My HRG may work but I'll have to play around with the cover some.

thanks guys
