Hole size, drilled hole or insert finger hole?
« on: September 02, 2008, 12:25:28 AM »
When determining the hole size in the ball, of the fingers, is it the 31/32 insert hole or the actual finger size in the insert? The reason I'm asking is I want to set the finger inserts 1/4 deeper than normal and than make an angle up from the front of the insert to the surface of the ball. Just an experiment.

Most but not all grips use 31/32" hole. The exception is ladies grips (smaller hole) and really large mens grips. Info is available on grip websites.

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear enough. The USBC says you can't have a hole in the ball more than 1 1/4" in dia. If I make a ramp leading to the 1/4" sunk in finger grip I'll be over the 1 1/4" max IF the finger hole is counted as the 31/32" drilled hole. If the size of the hole is considered the finger size of the insert then I'll be ok.

Ric, my question is still being misunderstood. Take for example the thumbhole. If I drill a 1 3/8" hole (illegal if left) but now put a thumb slug in that hole and drill a 7/8" hole the original 1 3/8" hole now doesn't count. Just the 7/8" thumbhole. Does the same reasoning apply to the 31/32" insert hole? If I now put a 11/16" insert in the 31/32" hole does the hole now become a 11/16"hole?

What I want to is put the top of the insert 1/4" below the surface of the ball. Then make a huge bevel leading to the front of the insert. But if I put the insert below the top of 31/32" hole then I have a stepped hole so the bevel in the front has to stop no farther away than 1 1/4" from the back of the 31/32" hole minus the bevel at the back of the hole. The reason I want to do this is because I was fooling around with inserts and put some cut off ones below the surface of the ball then got the idea of making a huge bevel to the lowered front of the insert. Just something to try and goof around with.

The rules governing drilling holes are below, copied from the rulebook at bowl.com.  There is NO limitation on the size of a hole that is used for gripping purposes.  There ARE limitations on the sizes of balance holes, vent holes, and mill holes.  Proceed with your experiment and let us know how it works.  --  JohnP

a.   Holes - The following limitations govern drilling holes in a bowling ball:

1.   Holes or indentations, not to exceed five, for gripping purposes.

2.   One hole for balance purposes, not to exceed 1-1/4 inch in diameter.

3.   One (1) vent hole to each finger and/or thumb hole, not to exceed 1/4 inch in diameter.

4.   One mill hole for inspection purposes, not to exceed 5/8 inch in diameter and 1/8 inch in depth.

Thanks for that heads up John. I glossed right over the fact that there are no size limitations for gripping holes. Makes what I want to try real easy and legal. Results to follow.
