Title: Ball Plugging Question
Post by: Vendettaman on June 28, 2006, 01:50:59 PM: Lately, every ball that I have plugged has a white ring around the plug. My question is what causes this? After the plug has been cut down and sanded there is a white ring around the entire plugged area. Is it caused from to much sanding, not a sharpe enough edge I am just at my wits end trying to figure it out. Also, where do you go to get the mica powder to add to the plug to make it look pearlized? Thanks in advance for any information anyone can provide. Our shop also uses Donkee plug, should I switch to a different plug?

as for the pearlizer you can use the DBA brand. they have regular silver pearl and a gold powered pearl.

the white ring might be caused by having your foam damn too close to the edge of the plug?

Post by: Pinbuster on June 29, 2006, 10:32:51 AM: We had better success when drilling out the bevel. This gave a clean sharp edge and any glue, skin oils, etc. in the coverstock.

The other issue was on large deep holes sometimes the plug would get to hot when it was curing and crystallize the edge of the hole. It was a pain but we would plug the hole up about Â¾ of the way and then top it off once the plug had hardened and cooled.

Post by: Mike Austin on June 29, 2006, 12:56:42 PM: That's what I was thinking, was it quick plug? We rarely use quick plug at. We use Ebonite Everclear plug and have no problems with it. Colors really well, is pretty clear with no color.

Pinbuster- get you a baby ice cube tray. Brunswick sells them, but you may be able to find one at a dollar store. Pour your extra plug into the tray and make baby plug nuggets. Put these nuggets into your big holes, these will take up enough room to keep the plug from getting too hot and curing too fast. Then you will not have to make two pours for one hole, saving time.

I am going to go up tonight and try pouring one 1/2 a hole at a time, and slow down on the stiring. Will Mica powder work with the Donkee Quick Plug?

Not to Hijack, but do you spray your trays with PAM or something to prevent sticking? We had a couple, but once the little "pluggletts" set, there was no way of getting them out (short of turning the try upside down and whacking it with a rubber hammer)... as you can imagine, it didn't take long before the tray wasn't able to hold plug material very well... LOL

Bottom line the problem was cured when I switched to Dba 8hr

the ice cube tray is made of flexible silicone. so it flexs very easily.

Dude, we make the ball rings with the Columbia ball cups too. I never have used WD40, but I am the next time! Thanks!

Post by: JohnP on June 30, 2006, 04:11:11 PM: Mike -- Be careful to get all the WD40 off the cubes. I don't know how traces of WD40 might affect curing of the plug. I have been told (have never used them personally) that the cube trays that supply houses sell are specifically designed for the purpose and will easily release the cubes. -- JohnP
