trying to understand layouts...what is meant by "label leverage"

In the strictest sense, label leverage means that the pin is 3 3/8" from the PAP and the cg is in the grip center.  However, any layout that has the pin roughly 3" to 4" from the PAP in a 1:30 type layout (pin above and right of the cg) is often referred to as label leverage.

Leverage means the weightblock is placed at a 45º angle at release.  This translates to a pin to PAP distance of 3 3/8".

Label is a reference to the center of your grip.  Its a holdover term from when all bowling balls had pancake weightblocks.  For the average bowler, the label is around 5" from the PAP.  However, it could be more or less depending on how high (or low) you track.

All in all, it an agressive drilling best suited for bowlers with a lot of natural control in their sytle or wide open lane conditions.

so, constantine if the label drill hooks a little early and too hard/sharp what is the natural progression in drilling choices.

If a label leverage drill is hooking too early and too sharp, then (coverstock tweaks aside) you need more length and a smoother backend.  Generally, the best way to add length is to move the pin further from your PAP.  This will reduce flare and use a higher RG.  As a secondary tweak, moving the CG closer to your PAP will round out the backend.
