Ball speed calculation
« on: May 22, 2011, 03:26:33 AM »
I decided to recheck my calculation on ball speed this morning at practice.  At 2 1/2 seconds exactly, I have calculated the ball speed to be 16.3 mi./h.  I don't know why I didn't think of this before, but it occurred to me that I usually see ball speed rated as off the hand or at the pins, with a general notation that the ball speed will slow down approximately 2 mi./h at the pins.  All these things being true, if I want to give someone my stats, would I use 16.3, or make an adjustment for whatever everybody considers a more standard notation.

I know this is a simple question, but I have seen that different ways before, and it never hurts to ask.

What is typical?

Thanks in advance

I like to know the speed off your hand. To me it's more valuable since there are varying amounts of friction on different lane surfaces and patterns.

Having said that, if your ball took 2.5 seconds to get to the pins, wouldn't that be an average speed? I'm just thinking out loud here. You used all 60 feet of lane to get your 2.5 second figure. Tell me if I am wrong though.

True ball speed is calculated off the hand. There can be too many variables that can effect the way the ball slows down...generally it is 2mph or so, but if you are on wood it can decelerate more, if the lane is dry or if the back ends are dry....

So I would go with off your hand.

Hmmm. Thanks for the replies. Clay, that's the problem I face is that 16.3 would be the average. Can speed off the hand be calculated without video? If it can, I'm drawing a blank....

I don't know how for certain, but your speed is good so I wouldn't worry exactly what it is. If a ball slows down on it's way, then you might guess it at about 17mph off the hand. Just guessing.

On a side note, I picked up some speed numbers years ago in an article and you are correct. If a ball takes 2.5 seconds from release to the pins it said it would be 16.36 mph.

Here are a few more examples for the benefit of anyone else who might care:

2.0 seconds would be 20.45 mph

3.0 seconds would be 13.64 mph

A stopwatch is all that is needed.
