A "hook/set" reaction is different from a rollout reaction in that the ball changes direction and enters the pocket at the proper angle with the hook/set, while the rollout shot has the ball just losing energy and straightening out.
If you enter the pocket at the proper angle, it doesn't matter AS MUCH that it has spent its energy. That is where the "set" part comes in. The ball is "set" in its angular path, and won't have the deflection that a straighter, "rollout" shot will have.
