Base of thumb discomfort

I was feeling pain at the base of my thumb with my original span.  Out of curiosity,  with another ball, I had it drilled with a span 1/8" shorter.  Now I don't feel discomfort, but feel the ball rubbing on the tendon at the base of my thumb.  Also, about an inch directly below the base of my thumb on the "fatty" part of the hand, it feels a bit sore. 
 
I am at a loss at what would be cause.  Any thoughts?

Was a thumb pitch change made to go along with the shorter span?

Pitch is the same 3/8 rev 1/8 to palm. Do you think if I cut down on the reverse that would help?

 I'm going go in a different direction and say the thumbhole may not be beveled enough.

+1    Seems to me you're a good candidate for a relaxed finger tip fitting.

Old span 4 3/4 4 13/16 new span 4 10/16 4 11/16.  Since I have a flat thumb, is it possible maybe I should have an oval thumb hole?  Seems like the hole has to be opened up too much leaving too much space for the front and back of thumb, but snug on the sides.  I hope that made sense...

I had a similar issue when I had my 3 most recent balls drilled.  My thumb was also moved up slightly and the pitch changed due to the fact that I was always tearing my thumb with the old span length (would tear at the base of the thumb and on occasion would tear the side due to the thumbhole shrinking.)  Also, the pitch was too far forward on the old balls. 

The solution was to bevel the thumb more, and it did the trick.  I also added a thumb slug to all of the new balls, so this way the feel is consistant.  It's nice to not rely on the Robby's skin protector like I used to.

lYou really need to work in person with a good fitter, this is hard to do over the internet.  More bevel might help, but 3/8 reverse is a little much for your new spans if your thumb flexibility is normal.  You're probably squeezing to keep a secure grip.  If the bevel doesn't do the job try 5/16 or 1/4 reverse.  --  JohnP
