beginner drilling layout
« on: July 07, 2012, 09:17:44 AM »
I am just looking into getting into bowling and want to purchase my first ball obviously I have nothing to go off as far as rotations or anything so my question to all of you is how do I tell the pro shop how I want my ball drilled if I haven't developed my form yet? I know I want a finger tip ball and I know I want to learn to hook a ball but the rest I am completely unsure of any help?

Make an appointment with them so they will have time to watch you bowl a few frames, then follow their recommendation on layout.  Since you don't have any of your specs any recommendation made without being able to watch you is worthless.  --  JohnP

Tell the pro shop operator exactly what you posted here.  Basically, he should sell you a entry level reactive ball (less expensive).  Watching you bowl does not make any sense right now.  You do not own a finger tip ball and you are just learning how to throw it properly, therefore, he has nothing to watch.

My best advise is for you to ask some of the better bowlers in you center where they get their equipment.  What is most important is that you go to a qualified Pro Shop that can properly fit your hand, sell you the proper ball and possibly give you lessons.  At your stage of the game, layout is not very important. Proper fit and execution should be your primary focus.  Trust the Pro Shop.

Good Luck

Given if he's just getting into bowling, what would be the point of watching him go out there throwing a ball? his style will be constantly changing at first, watching him throw a house ball/conventional grip isn't going to tell you anything useful about rev's, rotation etc

Worrying about a layout for someone just starting out, is kind of putting the cart before the horse.

Just get a basic layout and worry about getting the fit of the grip right at first.

I had this conversation with my brother a few years ago. He was getting into bowling regularly and got into a league with me and some friends. He bought a ball from the pro shop and they drilled it pin over ring finger. It ended up giving him a strong reaction that he learned to work with and he got pretty good.

But don't really worry about drilling and layouts right now. Just worry about technique and repeating shots. Oh, and don't forget about converting your spares.

The key starting out is getting measured and having a proper fit on the ball.  Because there will be a lot of variables with hand position, etc with just starting out, this is probably the only case where PAP and specific layouts are not as important compared to us who have been in the game for a long period of time and know what we need.

A standard pin over ring layout would typically be the safest way to go on an entry level piece.  As the skill and technique develops, you'll then become more familiar with what works best for you.

Now with the fit, don't be afraid to tell your pro shop if you want more bevel, the ring finger to be more oval, or anything like that.  After all, you're going to be throwing the ball and you want it to "fit like a glove."  In my case, I don't have the holes beveled much, but do have the ring finger a little more oval because of problems in the past where I would tear the finger.  Ever since, no issues and it fits perfectly.
