this may possibly be the worst ever question on this forum however i am curious.  I don't have the capital to purchase a real nice ovalmatic or jayhawk oval machine, yet really want to make precision ovals.  Would a standard for/rev/lateral ball jig attached to a milling table, on a regular drill press work?  It seems feasible but thought i might ask if anyone had ever thought about it.

The milling machine will give you the capability of measuring and repeating the table movements in increments as small as 1/1000th of an inch.  The issue will be in the strength and sturdiness of the bowling jig.  I've had customers in the past attempt to use a rubber-tipped clamp jig along with a milling machine.  It had marginal results at best.  Good luck!
