Title: Beveling holes for slugs?
Post by: tjj300 on May 30, 2006, 01:30:50 AM
Does anyone bevel the drilled hole before pressing in a slug?

I hit the very top rim of the hole just to knock off the sharpness. I have not had any chipping or cracking issues around the top of the slug since I started doing this.

I only sand finger holes with a hand sand 100 grit!

I notice everybody complaining of cracks and the like from around finger holes.
I've never had them when I sand edge of finger holes.

PS I leave thumbs alone.

i never bevel thumb for a slug

i do sand the inner hole a little to make slug go in better(if not you may crack ball), but i never sand within a 1/4 of top.

also
i do bevel finger holes slightly

I usually buzz the hole out quickly prior to installing the slug, but don't bevel the edge.  I could imagine a small "gap" between the edge of the slug and the ball if bevel was used.  Although I doubt this would cause any real problems, I don't think it looks as good...

I usually hit insert holes with the bevel sander for a second or two just to take off the sharp edge. and for thumbs slugs i do the same. But i always check the inside of the hole where the fillers are to make sure there isn't any hills or valleys. if there is anything sticking out i use a mandrel and just smooth it out so the slug can't get caught on any edges.

If it is a Brunswick ball, no.

If it is anything else, yes.

Viz A Balls and Poly I try to talk them out of using a slug all together. They will crack regardless of what you do!
