They say that the pin should be at least 4" form your axis, so I see your problem. Even though you'll end up with negative side weight, I would adhere to their instructions. If the ball company says drilling other ways than they recommend may produce undesired effects, I would do as they say, at least until more people understand how this ball works. They have several layouts with negative side weight cg placements, so I don't think that will hurt.
With the way this new core works along with HART and cg marking, there is almost no way to effectively use a weight hole. Even if you drilled the middle finger deeper, you still won't be able to use too big of a weight hole. If I didn't know any better, I would say this ball was designed to meet the USBC proposed rules that didn't get passed. This ball is strongest when the cg is within 1" of the center of the grip and that all but eliminates the possibility of a weight hole. Sound familiar?
