blisters and lateral pitch
« on: January 14, 2004, 05:16:08 AM »
Ok, say im getting a blister on the left side of my thumb, i would move the lateral pitch to the left?? Correct, same as you would move it to the right for one on the right of the thumb. So what do i do when im gettin blisters all over my thumb? Never more then 1 at a time, but its like their appearing in random spots. Ive been getting on on the left of my thumb, around the knuckle, but on the side, and then i got one on the same spot but on the right of my thumb, AND NOW ive got one the size of frickin russia below and on the side of the knuckle on the right side. WHAT DO I DO?

I decided to drill out my thumbs a bit so i could wear tape when i bowl, problem solved, except my bowling went to chit cause the release was too quick. Plugged them, re drilled them, just a little bigger, and put tape in the ball, boom, blister again. HELP!

good luck and high scoring

Ya...without the other information it's tough to recommend anything.  However, it could also be an issue of where you are putting the tape in your hole and it rubbing too much on your thumb.  I've seen this happen to a lot of people over the years.

You have quite a few balls in your arsenal. Are they drilled the same? Span and pitchwise?

Matt, like you I used to have tons of problems with my thumb.  Luckily Chris Schlemmer worked for a while in our proshop until he went on tour as the Storm Rep.

We had to go to an oval thumb to get the right fit.  I have a very flat thumb and by the time we had the hole big enough for the width, there was too much of a gap in the back.  Of course we also experimented quite a bit with pitches/spans until things finally fit.

After getting the correct spans & pitches, it took 6 months for my thumb size to finally stabilize.  I was taking all my balls in about once a month to have a smaller thumb hole drilled.  Went down 3 drill bit sizes overall.

If you have a wide flat thumb, might be worth looking into.  If you are one of those rare people that have a round thumb, can't help much.

Not sure what area you're in but the last time I was down under it seemed like my thumb would shrink or swell depending on what house I was in.

If you're around Adelaide, get in touch with Brenton Davey.  If he can't solve the problem you'll have to turn into a no-thumber

matt smith -- A correction, just to be sure you and your ball driller are speaking the same language.  Pitches are specified with the grip located so the thumb is down and the fingers are up.  So, to correct a blister on the left side of your thumb, extra right (not left) pitch would be used.  This would move your thumb slightly toward the palm of your hand and should relieve the pressure.  --  JohnP
