"Asym never works 4 me" - Fact or fiction
« on: December 24, 2006, 03:26:48 AM »
After having 5 Asyms that lope and look pathetic going down the lane, I've obviously got a bias towards symetric. However, is there physically such a thing as not having a release that can be used with Asym gear or is it really just a matter of having a correct drill? I'd really like to get at least 1 asym in the bag to get a different look.
Feedback appreciated.

I have tried alot of diferant balls from most of the ball companies over the last 6 yrs. and after buying a Morich Awesome revs ball, and tried differant surfaces an even adding a wieght hole, I can to the same conclusion.Asyems dont work for me and I pride my self on being albe to change the roll on a ball to get alot of differant looks down the lane.So I sold it to a friend of mine for 5$ and wont waste my money on asym-cores anymore. They work good for alot of people, not me.

In asymetric balls its all about the location of the mass bias.  It is all about the MB placement.  any ball can be drilled for anyone because its all about your pap and the relation of the layout to your pap

After having bad luck several times myself, I finally got an assym to work for me, but it was a very mild assymetry.

I had a zone classic drilled with the m.b. strong, and it would roll out and stop hooking at 35 ft.  I tried a friends total annihilation with the m.b. strong and it had much the same thing going on with it. I swore off of asymm's.

Then, I got the chance to throw the blue/green centaur.  Granted, it is a weak assym, but it was also drilled with the m.b. in a weak position ( left side of thumbhole ) and it worked great.

I then got an Impulse zone.  Not quite as strong as the classic ( the assymstry at least ), and I drilled it with the m.b. at 90 degrees, way down past the v.a.l.  This ball was also very smooth and usable.

So, I finally decided, it was probably a bit of both of the factors you mention because, with the m.b. strong, I couldn't use an assym either, but with the m.b. in a very weak position, I got a good reaction I could use.

Assym's don't work well for everyone, but with the proper drilling, they can be used.  It's just hard to find the drill that is right for you sometimes.

Remember, assymetry is used to enhance the balls ability to find its preffered spin/roll axis.  If you have a hand release that already spins/rolls up quickly, the added strength of a m.b. may only cause the ball to spin up/roll out sooner than you would want.  Usefull on total floods, but hard to gauge on a THS.

P.S. I prefer symmetric cores, but after much effort, found a way to drill an assym that works for me.  But, even after I did, it didn't work any better than the strong symmetric balls I already had. Only the weak drills allowed me to use them at all.  I cannot envision EVER finding enough oil to use an Epic Battle ( or something similar ) with a strong assym drilling.

Ive only used symetrical balls untill now. Ive got a S&D, still undrilled. I think i will have a compleatly different reaction with it, than the other stuff ive used.

Thanks to all. Let me sit back and digest these thoughts and see what happens. bottom line though...If I can't get a fresh look at the lane with an asym, even finding one that's drilled right would not be a profitable exercise in time or money.

It can happen.  I've found that you rev the ball early in the lane then you get the asymmetric core to rev to soon.  It revs up hard in the midlane but has nothing left in the backend.

EXAMPLE:  My Thunderstruck Pearl hooks MORE than my Domination (both ball layouts are very similar too...... as similar as it can get anyway.)

With weaker assymetrics like the Track Havoc and Storm Triple X, I had some success, but assymetrics with exceptionally strong MB's like  most ball companies are putting out nowdays along with their strong covers, have been a complete flop for me. I have switched to symmetrical core balls "only" and currently have one ball or more from 4 different companies and I haven't had the problems with these balls that I had with the overly strong MB's and strong covers balls. I won't be going back to assymetrical cored balls any more.

That's strange.  My teammate, a full roller, has had the best luck with his last two balls, both asymmetrical.

This may be my bad.  I was talking in reference to the grip centerline ( as in a line drawn from it at a 90 degree angle ), not as an actual drilling reference.  Sorry for any mis-understanding.
