Title: Broken blood vessels under thumb nail
Post by: Raven829 on July 11, 2006, 08:31:25 PM
I have experienced this problem for quite awhile now.  I am right handed, and the problem is at the tip of my thumbnail halfway between the top and side of the nail.  It is hard to describe so below is a link to a pic.

I have a feeling that this is a thumb pitch issue.  Everything feels ok until my release and that's when I feel all the pressure.  My span is 4 11/16 on the ring and 4 9/16+ on the middle.  It is not stretched and feels fine.  My thumb pitch IIRC is 1/8 reverse and 3/16 right.  Any suggestions?

I agree you have a pitch problem.  The way you describe it

makes me think that when you release the back of your thumb nail is rubbing on the back of the hole.  I would try a little more reverse pitch, maybe to 1/4, and less right, maybe to 1/16.  I don't like to make this type recommendation without being able to analyze your hand in person, it's just a guess.  I would start with a fresh thumb hole, using a large (1 3/8") slug.  Try different pitch combintions until you find one that gives you relief from the pain and a clean release.  Good luck and let us know how you come out.  --  JohnP

JohnP-

Thank you for taking the time to respond.  I went to the shop today and talked to the owner about the problem.  He immediately wanted to go more right, but I was hesitant.  So to humor me he reslugged a ball with 0 lateral and 1/4 reverse, which is the amount of reverse I have always used; not the 1/8 I posted earlier.  Anyhow, I threw the new ball 2 shots and told him it was quite a bit worse.  We went back into the shop and went to 5/16 right and kept the 1/4 reverse.  This ball was much better, but by this time my thumb was so tender that anything was bothering it.  I am going to let it heal and throw the ball with the new pitches and see what happens.  I might have to go a little more yet, but it feels like we're on the right track.  Thanks again for the response, it is much appreciated.

I think you needed more reverse in the thumb or some more bevel. if you get the burn on the nail you need more reverse and you get the burn on the base of the thumb you need less reverse or forward pitch.
