Does a change in finger pitch also indicate a change in span?
I recently changed my finger pitches from 1/8 forward to 0. No other changes were made. After bowling and the next day I have some pain in my middle finger between my middle joint and the knuckle (on the back of the hand). I read Bill Taylors book on laying out a ball but it wasn't too specific on this. Does the span have to change for this kind of pitch change?

I would not change spans for a 1/8 pitch change. Probably would for a 3/8 change. The finger hole's not too tight, is it? -- JohnP

JohnP,
No, they're not tight. I have "arthritis" bumps on my fingers and I open the finger inserts with a hand drill. The fingers go in very easily.
I did switch from Turbo to Vise grips. That wouldn't have an effect, would it?
Thanks....John

Not sure, but I wouldn't think so. Was there any change in the lateral pitches? -- JohnP

Both were ovals. I checked the span and it is exactly on. The laterals are supposed to be the same. I will have them re-checked this Friday. Thanks for the responses.

So who's drilling your balls now, John?

My laterals are the same: MF 3/8 left and RF 3/8 right. These are the same laterals that I had with the 1/8 forward.
Jeff....pm sent.

John,
I agree with JohnP.
Could you just have had a tendonitis attack or an arthritis flare-up?
and the change is coincidental??

Jeff, I guess it's possible that it could be attributed to something else but this is the first time that I had pain in my middle finger. When I spoke with my driller he just suggested that I go back to the 1/8 forward pitch in my fingers being that I had no problems before. My fingers are very inflexible due to many, many years of bowling and I'm sure that 1/8 forward is not the right pitch for me. Although I had no pain, I never felt the ball on my finger pads either; felt the ball on the side of my fingers.
I tried going from zero to 1/16 forward in my middle finger and used it yesterday but still had pain. The Vise grips seem tackier than the Turbos I used in the past. Is it possible that the tackiness has something to do with it? I guess my next step will be to order some Turbos and try them in these balls.

I can see how a tackier grip could cause more stress on the finger joints. Have you considered trying a ball without grips? If your joints are very inflexible, you need a fair amount of reverse pitch. Your finger pads should be in full contact with the front of the holes. I personally use 3/8 rev on my MF and 5/8 rev on my RF, without grips. -- JohnP
