Cutting plug

Can you use a plug cutter on a drill press? Or will I have to get a router?

Yep, what Greg says.  Plug cutter on press works probably better, is faster, BUT is messier and more dangerous.  You can mess up more than the ball if you don't be careful and take your time!!!

I've used a plug cutter before, but it was on a milling machine. I was told you couldn't use one on a press.

Email or call for pricing.  I don't use that one myself our shop already had a similiar one, but I have seen that bit in action and our shops are turbo shops.  

The actul cutting takes practice, go slow so as not to heat the plug up and make soft spots on it and cut it down really slow at the bottom so not to harm the ball a few crap balls to practice on and you will be fine.  It not hard once you get the hang of it.  I was scared to death of screwing peoples balls up and now I am one of the better plug guys around.  Make sure the press is on 0/0 and if you have digital readouts cross check agianst the ball before you start they can be off.

Mike Austin -- Re: plug cutter being messy.  I use a router and have made a box that has holes for two vacuum hoses to keep the mess in the box.  But when I went to drilling school, the teacher used a plug cutter.  He had a router shield (use link below to see what I'm talking about - you can get it cheaper through your distributor) with the hole in the top enlarged so the plug cutter would fit through it.  Hooked it up to the vacuum cleaner, slapped it on the ball and cut the plug down with the vacuum running.  Lifted it up when he wanted to check how the cut down was coming.  Almost no mess.  --  JohnP

Just be sure the press hasn't been incremented before you start or you can really f*** up the ball.  Always best to put the ball in where the plug cutter can contact a normal surface, lower it and spin it to make sure.
