Strange Ball Track
« on: October 05, 2007, 08:13:23 AM »
I looked at the ball track of a no-thumber on my team last night and it was strange.  He is right-handed and the track went in between the fingers and about 1.5" left of the thumb.  He was throwing an old urethane Blue Rhino Pro so there was almost no flare, just one solid oil line.  Has anyone seen this and do you have any suggestions on a drilling.  Thanks.

Almost no flare?  Where is the bow tie?

Many no thumbers have odd tracks, full roller, or right of the ring finger when looked at from the top of the ball are pretty common with them.

If it was an old urethane Rhino it won't flare....the urethane ones didn't have any core dynamics....

I might be wrong on that but I'm pretty sure that was the case.  Someone correct me if I'm incorrect.

Rhino Pro's had real cores with very little flare... the Rhino's had a 3-piece core with no flare...

This ball should flare a little, but quite frankly I'm done trying to help out on this thread.  If he doesn't use his thumb, what's the point of worrying about it?

You are not going to be able to accomplish anything drilling wise with that Rhino.  If there was something with some core dynamics he is wanting to drill, something with the pin up and outside the ring finger to increase flare, get his PAP, and layout the cg or mass bias based on his PAP and he should be fine.

Correct.  When I throw that ball there is almost no flare.

Yeah, we are not planning to do anything to the Rhino.  Thanks for the suggestion on the pin up drilling.  I will take one of my pin up balls next time and see what happens when he throws it.  I mainly asked because I have never seen a track like that and the drill sheets do not address anything like it either.

Everyone has a unique PAP and the drill sheets that come with bowling balls are merely guidelines.  They are not set in stone for how to drill bowling balls.  We ALWAYS have to factor in the bowlers PAP when laying out a bowling ball.

That being said, with a bowling ball that has a dynamic core, as long as the pin is up around the fingers the balltrack should flare away from the fingers.  Well, as long as the pin isn't further than 6 1/2" from the PAP.  So, worse case he hits the fingerhole for a couple of revs in the heads.
