Cracking thumb plug
« on: December 22, 2003, 05:17:22 PM »
Has anyone had a problem with a thumb hole that has been plugged and only moved about 1/4" cracking out? My V2 has has this happen 2 different times now and a Columbia Wine U-dot and a Rage do the same thing. I am starting to think that it is the ball driller because he has plugged all three balls for me. They all seem to start to crack on the lower right hand side of the thumb hole. Anyone have any ideas?

This is a common thing when drilling back thru a plugged area. We advise against doing this but will at the customer request.

You can plug the whole ball and move the grip to a new area where you are not drilling thru or rolling over one of the old plugs.

Or as Greg T said, if move is small enough you may be able to slug the hole. But if the pitches in the thumb are different and the span difference is very much then you'll have trouble drilling out of the slug which can fell funny.

Sounds like your driller isn't following the pluging and curing procedure properly. either exposing it to too much humidity, or his mixture is off of resin and hardener. He might have air in his pumps as well and cause a poor mix. If he's using the quick curing plug for example less than 2 hours sometimes the quick drying material heat it generates is too much, and causes cracking too.

Thanks everyone.

I don't think humidity would have been a factor here in New Mexico. I think he might use the quick set plug material. I have wondered if that is what he was using because I can usually get a ball back the next day unless he is really busy.

Thnaks again.
