I watched a show where John Mazza was bowling and they talked about he only used his pinkie and ring finger to get more length. My question is from the drillers here is if you drilled a ball using your index and middle finger what would be the results of this test??? More rotation or tilt or just spinning the ball alot??? Thanks for the real answers up front

Pretty sure it just cuts back on how much rotation you can impart to the ball. Another variant of this is to just remove your middle finger. Technically this last idea is only legal in balls with 3 holes.

You may have additional finger holes that are unused so long as they're covered up when you throw it. Put the finger across the hole, just not in it, and you can use a ball with a weighthole and only one finger.

Unless the USBC has changed the rule on this, that only applies to the thumb hole on a ball being used by thumbless bowler.

I think Billy Hardwick bowled with his index and middle finger.
Not 100% sure?

I have a guy in my leauge that uses ring and pinky he has so moch tilt that he gets great lenght but the backend reacvtions he gets are uncontrolable het throws a threat that is smoothed to 1000 abralon and the thing hooks off the lanes ive tried numerous times to talk him into changing with no prevail
when he is on he is hard to beat but he is on only a third of the time

I'm sure. Yes, he did. He was the ultimate control bowler. He also won a "few" PBA titles. He had severe arthritis in his ring finger.

WARNING
Do not ever use your ring and pinky finger unless your in superb physical conditon and are a large person with big hands. I attemped this grip back with I was a cranker I got this idea from Mike Miller but with the thumb in. It worked great for a while in 2000 until January of 2001 my hand ripped apart in warm ups. Now to this day I the whole left side of my hand is in pain, constantly have to put rubber bands around it to type on a keyboard ( like right now as I write this ), use analgesics and icepacks. Probaly need wrist/hand surgery. Luckily it doesn't hurt when I bowl but it does when I do things that require alot of finger movement. I can't stress enough how dangerous this grip is and was a stupid idea to even try in the first place.

BrianCRX90 sorry to hear that it is hard to understand my post, i was more thinking the index and middle finger but thinking about what you wrote i think i will pass. Probably too much tendon stress with the ball weight not centered on the hand anyway thus crazy idea, i was just thinking the middle and index finger would create more tilt but probably would really be less tilt.

The rule simply specifies how many gripping holes a ball can have, not that you have to use them. If I wasnt to put a pinky hole in and use it part of the time, as long as my finger covers the hole, it's legal. If I'm wrong, please show us the section of the Rule Book or Specification Manual that says it only applies to a thumbhole.

I don't know anything about the ring finger baby finger grip.
Just know the guy is still doing it...medium average size guy...decent size to slightly above average hand.
Tons of hand in the ball...great revs and one of the high average guys around here.

I'd think that an index/middle finger grip would reduce side roll and create more of an end-over-end roll, maybe even a full roller reaction and a high(er) track with less back end?

D Pat, I don't need to see the e-mail, but I'm sure that there are people who may need it to finally put it to rest.

I have often wandered what this would do, had at one time thaught about having an old ball drilled up with just the pinky and ring finger and thumb drilled just to see what it would do but just never did

Barry, I've used the pinky/ring on very dry lanes before. Works well actually but it's a strain on the fingers if the ball isn't drill for it.
