Need some layout help...
« on: August 24, 2009, 08:55:47 AM »
I picked up a Roto-Grip Empire 2nd from bowling.com.  Here's the ball facts from the website:

http://www.rotogrip.com/products/balls/ball.asp?ballid=94

They list the rg at 2.5, the differential at .55, and the mass bias differential at .012.

The pin distance is loooooong on this one.  The pin, mb, and cg are all in line, but the mb is 7 inches from the pin, and the cg is 9 inches from the pin.

I was thinking of using Mo Pinel's dual angle technique and using a 20 degree drilling angle, and a 30 degree angle to the val, placing the pin about 5 inches from pap, and going with a gradient line balance hole at P3.

My hope is to end up with a forward rolling ball that revs up quick, and still has a good pop at the end.

Am I way off here?  Do you think I should just follow Roto-Grip's asymmetrical drilling guide?

Any advice from you experts would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

with a 20 degree drilling angle, i would think that ball will be DOA by the time it gets to the back of the lane.

Before you do anything else confirm the cg location and top weight on a dodo scale.  --  JohnP

Thanks.  I did some more reading and decided to go with a 50 degree drilling angle, but stuck with the 30 degree angle to the val in hopes the ball will rev up a little quicker.  I also put the balance hole at P3.

Because I didn't want to have negative side weight, I limited the size of the balance hole to just large enough to bring the ball within legal limits on the finger/thumb weight.  The static weights ended up being 1/8 ounce positive side weight, and just under 1 ounce of thumb weight.

Do you think I should make the balance hole larger to reduce the thumb weight even though it would end up with a negative side weight?  Or am I good?

Despite what some may think, having negative side weight or thumb weight isn't a sin.

I suppose it makes little difference in the long run.  I'm just trying to get optimal performance out of my drillings.  I'm not really sure of the effect of thumb weight vs. finger weight or positive side weight vs. negative side weight...or for that matter, even top weight vs. bottom weight.  Any one got a link to an explanation of the effects of static weights on how the ball rolls/reacts?
