Creating an oval ?

Just wanted to hear other opinions on the subject. How do you drill ovals? With the drill press or manually by hand. With maybe a drill and sanding drum or ……whatever else you may use. If you use the drill press, do you have a formula or a specific way that you do it? Maybe something that isn’t so time consuming. I have always done mine by hand for 2 reasons. One, I don’t have a ton of material to remove for the oval. And two, when there are 5 customers in the shop waiting for balls to be drilled, using the press is very time consuming. I understand people will say they use the press because thats the only way to repeat the results. But for me its about feel. And I can do it manually and get all my thumbs to feel the same

I was looking more for thoughts on how other drillers create ovals for there customers.

I work with Jack Jurek and he has a old Quantum that had pre drilled holes in it, including ovals at certain cut ovals. All i have to do is find the correct oval cut, then take their thumb, mark where on the hole their knuckles are located right as the thumb enters the hole, and i use a protractor to measure the degree off the center line. thats how i do it.

I've got a rasp style bit in my hand drill. I mark the angle, remove some material, rasp it smooth, check with caliper until I get with a few 1000ths of inch, Then sand smooth with bevel sander. I can get my thumb pretty much perfect every time using the caliper and taking my time.

It is not speedy though. It takes a little while but it works for me.

I let my driler drill the thumb hole a little to small, then i work out the oval with some low grit sandpaper, and then smooth the surface with some higher grit paper.

I use the other way round... I let my driller drill the hole just right as round hole and fill the space with tape... But I guess that was not asked

I drill the hole and then work it out with a rasp.  I have a workout tool, but haven't tried using it.

I always thought that you'd really need to use a mill to get repeatable results if you are going to "drill" the oval.

Since I'm using a standard jig (Rudell?) and older drill press, I don't trust trying to do that with my drill.
