Reputable Pro Shop
« on: October 02, 2003, 02:32:08 AM »
Hi Everyone!  I need help.

I'm very unhappy with the pro shop I'm currently using.  I ordered a ball over 1 1/2 months ago and it's still not in.  I keep hearing one excuse after another.

Can someone please recommend a reputable pro shop in the Long Island, New York area.  I live on the Nassau/Suffolk border.

Your quick responses would be greatly appreciated.

Working in a pro shop, I'm fairly sure they're not excuses.  First of all, what ball did you order, and in what weight?  Pro shops are subjected to the availability of the balls from their distributors, which are in turn in the same position from the ball companies.  It's not uncommon to have certain balls or shoes or other items on backorder for months at a time.  It's very unlikely that they would be jerking you around on purpose, seeing as how if you never buy the ball, they can't make the profit.  Have you paid for the ball yet?  Even if you have, they can't refuse you a refund for services that were not rendered.  Either way, they lose.  It's been so frustrating dealing with some people here that my boss has had to write up contracts for people to sign if we have to order a ball.  I'm not unsympathetic, but if you're dealing with an actual pro shop and not one that's online, I very much doubt they're yanking you around for the heck of it.  I'd be more than happy to offer any more information or advice regarding their actions to help you figure out exactly what they're doing, if it's legitimate, or passive negligence.

HAH!  I don't know ANYBODY now!

Being in adult leagues teaches you many things.

1.  You're not on top anymore, but there are a lot more people that suck worse than you do now.

2.  The myth about the youths having an easier shot is NOT TRUE.  I'd have an entire ring collection if it was.

3.  Drunk adults are a lot funnier than drunk youths.

I have been dissatisfied with this pro shop for quite some time.  It's located inside of the bowling alley and is therefore convenient.  A lot of other people are also not happy with the way he conducts business or drills out equipment.

Last year in my area, I went to order some Dexter shoes for my wife and the pro shop said it would be 4 weeks.  Come to find out that he was behind paying his supplier and knew he could't order anything until he paid.  This is what I was told by someone close to the owner's wife.  So I ordered off line and had them in less than a week.

two very good pro shops come to mind. Norms Pro Shop in East Meadow Lanes.
Bowl Mart in Mineola. I know the drillers in both shops.
Norms might have better prices.
I have also heard good things about the pro shop in Bellerose Lanes.

If I could add 1 more... Bobby Brust over in South Levitown comes very well recommended. He does a great job of drilling and explaining what to expect from the ball. As previously mentioned, Norms pro shop is also highly recommend if thats closer to you.

Good Luck

Hi Everyone!

My ball finally arrived and my current shop drilled it out.

I attempted to try it out in league but the lanes were bone dry.  I threw it anyway just to get the feel of the ball and it fits beautifully.  I'll try it this week again on a fresh oiled league shot.  I hope it was worth waiting for.

I'll keep your recommendations on file for future reference.

Thanks again!

Lady Wannabe, I don't live too far from you. I've heard that Mike D. was very good.  I'll send you a private message with my preference.

The Perfect Fit Pro Shop at Sports Plus (exit 62 on the LIE), ask for Joe Farley.

I brought him a discontinued ball I got from eBay (my coach recommended I get one, a Command Zone ARC), he fit me, drilled it while I waited, then gave me a coupon for a free game to try it out.

Great fit, great service, reasonable cost.  What more can you ask for?
