Switchgrip bit problem

I bought the switchgrip package and the 1 1/2" bit that comes with it is really rough on the balls.  If I try to drill over a thumbhole that is already there, it chips the heck out of the edges and is really loud.  The bit seems dull, but I can't be for sure.  Maybe it could be because it is such a wide blade that it is harder on the surface?  It is not as bad if I drill a virgin hole and it has some tension when it gets to the outside of the bit, but it is still a lot harder to push than the other bits.  Anyone dealt with this?

Not sure, I bought the press used from a BR member.  I can check.  I'm pretty sure there isn't a speed adjustment.  I guess I'm naive and thought that most drilled at the same speed...

Check the belt on the motor, there should be a pulley with different grooves in it, this is your speed adjustment.

Or... Ur bit could be too sharp.. That too can wreck havoc on the edges..

No, faster is not better. Check with the maker, but I would guess you want to be around 350 to 450 rpm's, one of the other guys might know the excact speed.

Fill the existing hole with quick plug. The large drill bit creates a vibration when drilling an existing hole. The plug just helps stabilize the bit. Do you have the same problem when drilling a new ball??
Being a machinist, the larger the bit you use, the slower the bit speed should be.

I didn't think of that.  That's a good idea because it doesn't vibrate as much in a new ball.  I'm going to try to slow it down a little also.  Hopefully if I slow it down a little, it won't affect the drilling with smaller bits.   I don't see how it would though....

I was looking at adjusting the belt on the press and I just want to check before I mess anything up.

I think the bit is too sharp, and your machine may be too slow.  I would not change the speed.  I like Merlin's idea.  I use an 1 3/8 hole before drilling the 1 1/2 hole for the Switch Grip.  After a few holes, your 1 1/2 should get slightly duller and not chatter so much.

Using your maching too fast can be dangerous, especially when cutting plug down.  Using your machine fast dulls your bits faster.  Too much heat cannot be good for balls or bits.  Slower is usually better, keep your bits sharp so you don't have to mash down on the bit to get it to cut, which causes more heat, which dulls your bits, which........

Just line up the cut lines with the 1 1/2, then switch the bit to a 1 3/8. Finish out the ball with the Turbo bit.
