Help determining my PAP
« on: September 20, 2008, 09:56:50 AM »
I'm about to embark on the adventure of drilling my own equipment.  Bought all the stuff and read up on everything.  So I'm starting out by determining my PAP.  Measured my PAP with a ball I threw today in a doubles tournament (Yeah Baby).

My PAP measured out with a horizontal coordinate of 2 1/4 inches and a vertical coordinate of 3/8" up.

I'm a stroker with a weak wrist and not a lot of revs.  I just throw a down and in shot.  Here's a video.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KzpKrckQtIk

I would be grateful if someone who knows more about this stuff than I do would take a look at the video and let me know if the numbers of my PAP seem reasonable.  Thanks!

After viewing your video, I came to a couple of conclusions.

You are pretty smooth and have solid fundamentals. I like your inside out armswing. That helps you stay under and behind the ball.

I had a hard time believing your axis measurements were 2 1/4 over and 3/8 up.

It is important to remember though, that anything is possible. Look at Matt O'Grady and Mike Fagan.

Matt's PAP is 2 7/8 over and like 7/8 up the last time I checked. Mike's PAP is 3 1/2 over and 1 1/2 up.

As long as your doing the proper procedure, there is no reason why it should be inaccurate. I like using an armadillo to find my PAP and I check it every 6 months because sight changes will generally occur.

I know I haven't really given you a solid answer but if you have any more questions just as or send me a message. I work in two pro shops on Long Island. I'm very qualified when it comes to this kind of stuff.

P.S. keep representing for the left side! (I'm a lefty too!)

I would recommend using a ball that didn't flare much. Your PAP is always 90 degrees from your track. Take some white tape down to the lanes with you. Place the tape at 2 1/4 right and 3-8 up. If that's accurate, the tape should stay steady the first 10 feet or so until the ball starts to lose axis rotation. Adjust it accordingly. I agree with dna though. I would be surprised if your PAP was that close. That would mean you have an extremely low track.

An armadillo is a great way to get a starting point for finding your PAP, but I like to go down to the lanes and watch the ball to be certain. Hope this helps.

Plastic ball thrown right in the oil makes it so much easier to find your pap. Leaves a nice single ring of oil on the ball.

So many questions, so little time but I'm having fun.

I think you used one of the later flare rings to determine your PAP instead of the initial ring.  I second the advice to use a plastic ball and confirm the location with a piece of white tape.  On a plastic ball without a dynamic core the tape should stay stationary for at least 40 feet so you can see it yourself.  Looking at your release I'm guessing your PAP is close to 5 1/2" over and 1/2" up.  --  JohnP

There's also some discussion of the PAP here.
