Did this guy screw my ball up?!?!?!?!
« on: March 03, 2004, 07:50:48 AM »
Ok, first off just  let me say that i'm not only new to this site, but to the bowling thing in general.  So any help you could offer would be more than greatly appreciated.
So i got this new Hammer Blade Pearl.  I believe it said that it was a 2 3/4" (at least that's what it said on the box)  I'm assuming that's the top weight, but i'm not sure.  Anyhow, i'm pretty much a hard core cranker, and i like to throw it hard on top of that.  Well the ball came with a solid white dot on it (the pin?)  and another smaller circle (i have no idea what this is)  Well this is my first ball, and i had a friend recommend it to me, because of my style of bowling.
Anyhow, i've been play with the ball for three weeks now, and i'm having a hard time getting it to go where i want it too. Here's my best description of the lay out.
the little circle is right in the middle of my thumb and fingers (not really under either the 3rd or 4th finger)  And the white dot is about one inch to the right of the hole for my 4th finger. oh yeah, and i'm right handed, and the ball is finger tip drilled.
I could really use some help with this, because i have a real problem with the ball breaking late, but to hard to get even close to the head pin (i usually get the 4, or 7 pin)
Anyhow any help would be great, Thanks!

P.S.  i realize that i really can't blame the proshop guy, since i'm so new at this, but i just haven't had any good games at all lately, and i am seriously wondering if i need to have the ball re-drilled.

there is nothing wrong with the drilling. it's generic and that's ok.

the problem is the ball's shell and the surface you are bowling on combined with your style.

it is pearl reactive which usually means it will go long and skate on the oil saving all it's energy and then react violently with the dry.

the combination of revs, oil volume and shell surface dictate how much.

you can sand the ball and see if that will even it out. that will help the ball grab earlier and read the lane before it encounters the real dry friction.

also have the guy drill a wt hole to help it lose rotation earlier.

given the ball there is only so much you can do. but go ahead and try to make it work. you can also plug the ball and put the pin on or near your PAP.

You are new so you must learn from your mistakes.  You took the advice of a friend who may or may not be qualified to recommend a ball.  This would also apply to him giving you advice on how to bowl as well. A high average does not necessarily equate to credentials.

It is likely that the PROFESSIONAL that drilled your ball in most cases is more qualified to recommend equipment than your buddy.  If you had your mind set (and new ball in hand off the net) your PROFESSIONAL had no opportunity to offer his/her expertise.

If this is your first reactive ball, it will react differently than your old ball.  With reactives, you will discover that less is more in most cases.  I would agree with Brian that you should seek a qualified bowling instructor if you are interested in developing a game as opposed to buying a game.  High Tech equipment will only get you so far in the absence of an understanding of bowling's fundamentals.

Good Luck!

A redrill could help, but probably the best thing for you to do is work on your release a little more. Reactive balls are made to react, the layouts help, but even with a redrill, it is still going to hook late.

The challenge of bowling is great. Just because you want to throw the ball in one manner does not mean that you can. You cannot dictate to the lanes, they dictate to you, so you have to play where they allow you to play.

My guess is that you need to work on weakening your release a bit.

Hey, it's me again.  I took some of your advice, and went and talked to the pro shop guy that drilled it for me.  He made a couple of sugggestions (on of which was to weaken my release), basically, he said i have good form, but the release needs some major work.  I went to the local league i'm in a few hours later, and scored almost right back to my average, which made me really excite, then in my second game, i started to go back to my old ways.  ( don't worry, i figured this out, and finished off the night beautifully.
I guess what i'm trying to say is thanks for all of the advice, and help.  I can already see and improvement in my game.
Thanks,
