Top Weights
« on: May 19, 2006, 05:14:43 AM »
I am posting this to see if someone can clue me in on how to find top weights of New balls and Used balls.  I would also like to know how to determine when and where to place an x-hole.

Thanks,
Tyler

Lots of factors go into what you're asking.  TW is a measure of how far above the midline the core is raised.  How far it's tilted is how long the pin distance is.

Shifting the CG away from the grip center creates side weight.  I think I've heard that 3oz of TW (undrilled) shifted 1" from the grip center will create 1oz of side weight.  The location of the weight hole will determine how the reaction is fine tuned.  Above the midline removes finger weight (in addition to side weight), adding thumb weight, making the ball roll earlier.  Below the midline adds finger weight, making the ball go longer.  Past the VAL (from the pin) increases the differential by removing mass from the side of the core (making it "taller"), inside the VAL removes mass from the top of the core (making it "shorter").

The link below describes how to use a dodo scale to determine static weights (including top/bottom) weight:
