thumb pitch for forward roll
« on: January 21, 2015, 07:57:54 PM »
They recently put extra oil on the lanes( longer too) and since I am more of a spinner I need help. My problem is that my ring finger side is "much weaker" than my middle finger side so staying behind the ball is tough for me, even with a wrist support.
I read that a thumb pitch to the left could help( I am a right hander). Does it mean the thumb will be pointing "away" from the arm? or towards the arm? How much in general ?
I know I have a reverse 1/2" pitch and will I need to adjust that?
Also considering Sarge Easter grip. Wonder which works better......
Thank you in advance!

What's your span?  I know (personally) that if I had 1/2" reverse in my thumb I'd be using way too much grip pressure and may spin the ball too.

Over the years I've gone from 3/16" reverse in the thumb to 1/8" forward and it's been great to not need to strangle the ball.

Unless you have a 5 1/2 inch span, 1/2 reverse in the thumb is going to cause you problems.  I wouldn't mess with a Sarge Easter until you get that pitch problem fixed.

There are too many possibilities here to even attempt to offer a real response...span is prolly off as well as pitch but understand, certain roll characteristics are created by your stature and physical attributes...I would recommend, instead trying to be your own doctor performing surgery on yourself, find someone qualified-in person not on a forum-that can offer more than a bandaid

Always your best bet!

I was giving my own example as an example only... We are all very different.  Finding someone qualified can be an adventure, though, because everyone SAYS they're qualified...

OK, I appreciate no one rushed to give me a halfhearted reply. I should have made it clear that I was not planning to drill a couple of new balls and go to a tournament, or throw them hard and hurt myself due to improper drilling/fitting. I just planed to plug up an old ball and try a few easy, just let it go kind of shots.

Like I mentioned, my main issue was during the downswing the weight of the ball would force my hand into a position so that the fingers were on the "side" of the ball. I could kind of straighten it at the top of the backswing but that created inconsistency.

Since I posted this I have tried a few things: (1) When putting the hand on the ball, tried to shift most of the weight to the pointer finger side. This was accomplished by a little thumb pitch to the left( away from palm or more like away from forearm); placed my pointer very close to the middle finger; and really spread out my pinky. (2) Adjusted the wrist support to minimize "cupping". (3) I used to have a very relaxed downswing and backswing but  now I am putting some strength in my arm to make sure my hand is mostly behind the ball, which is much easier with the wrist support in a "straighter" position.

Can feel the weight of the ball on my fingers during release now. Ball reads the lane much better. Even picked up 2 mph ball speed without really trying.

Thanks everyone!

Why are we changing thumb pitch for additional oil???? Add some surface and experiment with that.
