Saw a ball drilled like this in league...
« on: February 19, 2009, 06:10:29 PM »
I'm writing this not knowing what the guy's stats are. But let's just say he was identical to me (PAP 4 over 3/8 up) just so we can have a frame of reference:

Pin was placed on his VAL about 3-4 inches down from the PAP. CG is approximately under the middle finger. Right-hander, low to low-medium revs, a little speed dominant, plays off the corner usually down and in.

I watched him closely to see if he was a full roller, because I'm obviously not accustomed to seeing someone with a pin on the VAL. Best I can tell is that he's just got a really weak release. Doesn't seem to keep his hand under the ball very well. Kind of suitcases the ball.

My question is, why would a driller place a pin on the VAL and below the midline? What are they trying to accomplish with that? This is assuming his stats are like mine, of course. The ball was a Columbia, perhaps an old pearl Beast reactive.

First, if you don't know his PAP location you can't know the pin is on the VAL.  But I do understand that it's in that area.  This type layout is used to help the ball rev and break early.  It's usually used for a bowler with a low track so there's no worry about hitting the finger holes.  The flare will be reversed, so for a low track player the later flare rings will be in the same area as the early rings of a high 3/4 player.  --  JohnP

Thanks. As I noted in my original post, I don't know his stats. He does appear to be a low tracker, but he doesn't appear to spin the ball the way a classic spinner does.

I'm accustomed to seeing pins in the track below the midline for full rollers, but this pin was on the thumb-positive side rather than thumb-negative.

In order words, this is not something you'd recommend me doing to one of my own balls, is it?

Actually, it sounds like it could have been drilled for a left handed full roller, he didn't get the ball used did he?

Depends, are you a left handed full roller? --  JohnP

He very well may have gotten it used. It's his only ball and he's not a guy that looks like he has the money to play ball roulette. On the other hand, the ball seems to roll well for him and he doesn't thump any holes.

And no, I'm not a lefty full-roller. (g) I am intrigued by what it would do if I threw it, but not enough to drop money on a ball to find out.

How well do you know the guy?  If your hand will fit it at all, ask him if you can throw it a few times after league some night.  Maybe that will satisfy your curiosity.  But don't worry if he says "no", some bowlers just don't like anyone else to throw their equipment.  --  JohnP

The old 'pin at 4.30' layout was an option for early roll on a few drillsheets for old 90's stuff. Of course those sheets didnt mention VAL's and other such 'modern' terms
